UPS began flying people in addition to packages for the first time in its 90-year history.
Five of the company's 197 planes will fly passengers on weekends to nine destinations in the United States and Caribbean. The rest of the week, the planes will ship cargo.
The company wants to make better use of its planes, which usually are grounded on weekends, said Douglas R. Kuelpman, UPS vice president. If the passenger service is successful, UPS will add more planes.
