For 10 years Jackson residents have known where to find Mel Gibson, Sharon Stone, Eddie Murphy and the like. The Movie House, a video rental store, located at 1335 Old Cape Road, has provided the most popular movies to its patrons for many years. In fact, the movie house celebrates its 10th anniversary this month.

Bought in 1986 by Vernon Davault, the Movie House is a family owned business corporation with Davault's daughter Helen Proffer as president and store manager.

"We have new and old movies," said Proffer. "If there's an old movie to be had in Cape Girardeau county, then you could probably find it here."

Davault does the purchasing, book keeping and laughingly calls herself a maid, considering she does a lot of the cleaning.

Things have changed considerably since Proffer first began working at the store when her father bought it 10 years ago. Beta videos were big then and now she says it's totally VHS.

Proffer says she enjoys her job and likes one aspect of it more than others.

"I love working with people," she said. "It makes the job enjoyable."

She says that business is good now and they have regular customers who come in every week.

And there are no plans for closing the first video store in Jackson.

"As long as there's a market for it," Proffer said, "we'll be here."
