Dr. Robert Fruehwald wants the region to hear the high notes of Southeast Missouri State University's music program.

"I would like to find a way to expand what we do," said Fruehwald, who was named chairman of the music department this summer.

The music department already offers some music classes at area high schools.

Music faculty and students give a number of concerts in Cape Girardeau during the school year.

But Fruehwald said he wants to take to the road and offer some concerts in the region, such as at Poplar Bluff or in Southern Illinois.

Fruehwald said computers have had a major impact on school music programs. Computers often serve as musical accompanists for students.

Music is composed on computers. "I don't think I have personally composed a piece on paper in the last 10 years," said Fruehwald.

"Most of my students use computers when they write music," he said.

In addition to composing, Fruehwald also has performed with the university's orchestra and chamber musicians.

Fruehwald said there is a renewed interest in music. "I know enrollment for music majors is up."

The school has about 100 music majors this fall.

Fruehwald has taught for nine years, including the last seven years at Southeast.

He replaces Dr. Sterling Cossaboom.

Cossaboom still teaches in the music department, but also directs the school's Advanced Placement program.
