CHESTER, Ill. -- The Battle of Cape Girardeau will be fought all over again today at Fort Kaskasia State Park.

A few hundred re-enactors will recreate the Civil War-era battle as part of the bicentennial activities planned for Randolph County, Ill.

The battle, in which Confederate troops attacked the Union garrison from the vicinity of Capaha Park and were repelled, will begin at 3 p.m. today.

Darrell Duensing, one of the organizers, said the Battle of Cape Girardeau was chosen to re-enact because it occurred close to Randolph County, which saw no Civil War battles itself.

The relatively small number of men involved also was a reason to choose the battle, Duensing said.

As far as he knows, the battle has never been re-enacted before.

On Sunday, the re-enactors will revisit the defense of Helena, Ark., at 2 p.m.

The events also will offer a military fashion show and crafts and food booths.

Parking is $5 per vehicle.
