Cape Girardeau's Board of Education met Friday night in closed session to evaluate school superintendent, Dr. Neyland Clark.

Board President Ed Thompson said results of the evaluation would be released in a written summary to all media no later than Monday morning.

Members of the community are interested in the outcomes, Thompson said, so he wants to be clear about what transpired.

Thompson said the board could take any number of steps, including reprimands, non-renewal of Clark's contract, an extension of the contract, or no action at all.

"We can do anything with his contract," Thompson said.

Before the evaluation began, Thompson said he hoped board members wouldn't grand stand about the evaluation.

He said a written statement from him would avoid misquotes or miscommunication about the proceedings.

Two board members suggested to Thompson that a written statement be made to the media.

This year's evaluation is being held prior to the school board election Tuesday. Two new members will be elected to the board. Thompson and board member Lyle Davis aren't seeking re-election.

According to the superintendent's contract, the evaluation should have been completed by the end of February. It has never been completed by that time.

Last year Clark's evaluation was concluded in August during the board's retreat in St. Louis. The board decided to give Clark a one-year extension of his contract and a pay raise. They later approved the extension and pay raise at an open meeting.
