JACKSON COMMUNITY UPDATE

Jackson Park Day, the celebration of the city park's 100th birthday, was a huge success. Over 100 people were in attendance and many spent the morning cleaning and fixing up our park. Many thanks to all who helped make Park Day a success.

The council recently passed an ordinance to contract with the Missouri Highway Department to install flashing lights at the new middle school on Broadridge and Route D. The city is always concerned with our children's safety and this will help make this intersection safer. We hope to have a stop light approved for this location in the future.

May 8-12 will be our annual clean up/fix up week in Jackson. During this week citizens may put out items at their curbside that normally would not be picked up. We hope everyone takes advantage of this service offered twice a year to our citizens.

Our new welcome to Jackson sign for the east corridor has been ordered and we hope it can be installed in the near future.

The Jackson Jaycees will once againt be having their annual July 4 celebration complete with fireworks in the city park. Please be aware for your safety that no other fireworks or glass bottles will be allowed in the park.

I will be appointing new committee assignments and other appointments at our May 1 council meeting. The new council will be sworn in and a new council year will be underway.

The design of offices, council chambers, community room and other areas has been approved by the council for our new city hall in the old Boatman's building. We hope, weather permitting, that we can occupy the new facility by late fall of this year.

Our vacant public works director position is in the process of being filled. Applications are in and City Administrator Steve Wilson will soon make a recommendation to myself and the council to fill the position.

The City Council meets every Monday night at city hall at 7:30. I encourage your input to keep our city on a progressive course in the future.
