A new statewide organization for teachers of Reading Recovery will meet in Cape Girardeau today.

The Missouri Association of Reading Recovery Educators, formed through the work of Cape Girardeau educators, will hold its first conference at the Scully building from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Reading Recovery is an intensive one-on-one remedial reading program for first-graders. Teachers help first-graders who are falling behind in reading skills catch up with their classmates. Research shows that youngsters who have completed the program keep up with their classmates in reading skills.

Some 70 educators from throughout Missouri will attend, including administrators, classroom teachers and reading recovery teachers.

The conference is co-sponsored by Southeast Missouri State University and the Cape Girardeau public schools.

Dr. Richard Bollwerk, director of curriculum for Cape Girardeau schools, along with Jeanine Larson Dobbins and Linda Robert served as the steering committee.

Reading Recovery teachers will get together for training but also to share stories and tips on what works.
