CITY COUNCIL OKs CABLE TELEVISION PACT

The city of Cape Girardeau is plugged into a new cable television pact.

The council Monday night gave initial approval to a 10-year franchise agreement with TCI Cablevision of Missouri. Final approval is expected at the June 19 council meeting.

The agreement calls for the cable company to upgrade its system and provide for refunds or credits to customers when there is a cable outage of three hours or more.

"It is the best thing we can get under the circumstances, and we should take it," Michael Maguire told the council. Maguire chairs the city's cable television committee.

He said there needs to be more use of the local cable access channel. He said the cable committee would be willing to supervise the operation of the channel.

Council members said they will consider it.
