TWO-WAY RACE DEVELOPS FOR CHAFFEE MAYOR

CHAFFEE -- After the first day of the filing period Tuesday, a race for Chaffee mayor already has developed.

Ward 1 Councilman Bill Cannon will face former mayor Bob Capshaw in the April 4 municipal election for the four-year mayoral term.

Mayor Ron Moyers has announced he will not seek re-election. He has served eight years since defeating Capshaw in 1987.

Cannon's term as councilman expires this year. He served in Ward 1 for six years and was the first to file for the mayoral seat Tuesday morning.

Cannon, 57, is a retired railroad engineer and businessman. He still has some farming interests, including raising exotic animals, and is involved in several civic organizations.

Capshaw, 74, served as Chaffee's mayor for 16 consecutive years from 1971. He had also served on the city council for six years.

Capshaw ran an automobile dealership in Chaffee from 1950 to 1982. He owned and improved over 50 parcels of land over the years. He had been active in various civic organizations.

In other first-day filings, Danny Finley is seeking re-election to the two-year term as Ward 3 council member.

Chaffee's Ward 1 will have a new council member since Cannon is seeking the mayor's seat. The Ward 2 seat is also open since former council member Ed Gauthier recently resigned due to his job commitments.

Ward 4 council member Tom Cunningham is expected to file for re-election. He handles many of the daily administrative duties for the city.
