"An Evening of Jazz with Richard Moore and Friends," a benefit for Southeast Hospice, will be presented Friday, Feb. 24, at Academic Auditorium.

Moore, a Cape Girardeau physician and pianist, will lead a band that includes John Quinn on sax, Jerry Ford on trumpet, Don Ford on drums, Steve Williams on drums, and Jim Wall on string and electric bass.

Their 7:30 p.m. performance will include favorites of the '30s, '40s and '50s. Requests will be taken from the audience.

Quinn, recently retired band director at Shawnee High School in Southern Illinois, is a longtime member of the Cape Girardeau Municipal Band and has played in numerous bands throughout the area, including the Jerry Ford Orchestra.

Brothers Jerry and Don Ford, both graduates of Southeast, got their musical starts in the Bob Sisco Orchestra and have long associations with the Cape Girardeau Municipal Band. Jerry Ford, a former state representative from Cape Girardeau, leads his own nine-piece orchestra and also heads the Dixieland Swinging Six.

Besides playing in his brother's bands, Don Ford is a past member of the 399th Army Band and at different times in his career made appearances with the Glenn Miller Orchestra, the Shirrells and the Drifters.

Williams, who played with the Bill Brandt and Herb Suedekum orchestras during the Purple Crackle's big band days, is a member of the Cairo, Ill., Fire Department.

SIU graduate Wall has been a participant in the Southern Illinois music scene since 1976.
