Milz is one of the 2,685 Sailors and Marines aboard the ship, which departed San Diego, along with the amphibious transport dock USS Juneau and the dock landing ships USS Comstock and USS Mount Vernon.

Milz has spent the past year training for a variety of situations he might encounter during the deployment. He will travel approximately 25,000 miles during the six-month voyage and will spend the majority of the time at sea. While deployed, Milz also will work with various foreign military units as they train in combined exercises conducting amphibious landings.

The 1993 graduate of Chaffee High School joined the Navy in January 1994.
