KELSO -- Rains from the remnants of Hurricane Erin dampened the spirits of the Kelso Jaycees and residents only slightly this weekend during the Kelso Sommerfest, the 19th year for the event.

Some of the Jaycees remember the early years of the Sommerfest when it was held on the city park's tennis courts. The last several years though, the event has dominated the city park.

"I don't ever remember having this much trouble with the weather," said Jerome Essner, a co-chair of the event, "but we've had more people come out so far than I thought."

This year, a horseshoe tournament featuring 34 teams and the beauty pageant were moved to other locations because of the rain and a Saturday morning volleyball tournament was canceled. A live band scheduled for Friday evening also was washed out.

Even with the wet weather, about 200 people visited the park during a light shower Saturday afternoon.

Essner and his co-chair, Mike Landewee, were hoping the rains would stay away for Saturday's festivities, which included the kids' pedal tractor pull, car show judging and entertainment provided by a sound system.

"We've had to do a bit of rescheduling and relocating," Landewee said.

Although officials had to move some of the events around, plenty of rides for the kids and food and beverages for the adults still were available for those chancing the weather, attending the annual event.

Contest winners from the Kelso Sommerfest competitions included Alyshia McBride, who was crowned Kelso Sommerfest Queen.
