WAPPAPELLO -- One person was killed and two injured early Sunday morning in a one-car accident in Wayne County.

Gary Barham, 22, of Excelsior Springs, the driver of the car, was pronounced dead at the scene on Route D, two-and-a-half miles north of Wappapello.

Two passengers in the vehicle, Matt Maclin and Gerard Long, both 21 and residents of Portageville, were taken to Lucy Lee Hospital in Poplar Bluff with serious injuries.

Maclin later was transferred to the Elvis Presley Trauma Center in Memphis, Tenn.

According to the Missouri Highway Patrol, the accident occurred Sunday at 2:56 a.m. when the car ran off the right side of the road while northbound of Route D.

The vehicle then crossed to the left side of the road where it overturned several times. All three occupants were thrown from the vehicle, the patrol said.

None of the occupants were wearing seatbelts.
