JACKSON -- Jackson residents will cruise past one refurbished and one new water tower in the next few weeks, both advertising the city's school team.

The refurbished tank, located near the water tower, should be completed and refilled in the next week. It will be white with red and black lettering that reads: "Jackson -- Home of the Indians."

At Monday's Jackson Board of Aldermen meeting, city administrator Steve Wilson said painters had to empty that tank because the hot weather caused it to sweat. Aldermen noted that they had a similar reaction to the weather.

The new water tank, located very close to Interstate 55 north of the Highway 61 junction, will be painted the same colors and carry the same message. Residents on the east side of town should experience fewer water pressure problems once it is in operation.

Board members authorized partial payments totalling nearly $61,000 for work on both tanks -- $30,211.20 to Caldwell Tanks Inc. for the I-55 water tower and $30,763.44 to Hogan Painting & Sandblasting for work on the power plant water tower.

In other action, aldermen accepted a low bid of $50,061 for new Jackson City Hall furnishings from Missouri Vocational Enterprises.

MVE is run out of the state penitentiary in Jefferson City. There, prisoners in a rehabilitation program build new furniture and refurbish old pieces for municipalities and government agencies.

Wilson said six private companies picked up information to bid on the furniture, but none returned bids after finding out MVE wanted the project. The prison program's prices run about 30 percent under private companies' prices.

Most of the city's current furniture is outdated and some needs repair.

"This furniture has been with us for 35 years and it has been good," Mayor Paul Sander said. "But we don't want to take it with us."

Jackson City Hall will move to the old Boatmen's Bank building on Courthouse Square before Thanksgiving, if the remodeling goes well.
