Calvin Bird, six-year director of the Cape Girardeau Civic Center, resigned his post Monday to pursue a new business venture.

Bird said he will continue to work with the center as its administrative organization is changed.

Ed Slaughter, president of the Civic Center's board of directors, said board members will meet next week discuss those changes. "We are kind of in a state of flux right now," Slaughter said.

He said he was sorry to see Bird leave the Civic Center. "Life is a series of changes. We wish him well," Slaughter said.

Bird has part ownership in two small construction companies, C & D Construction Co. and Honest Abe Inc., in Jackson. He also wants to return to college to pursue an advanced degree.

"I also want to spend some time with my family," Bird said. "I have a beautiful wife and little girl who need my attention."

Bird has been director of the Civic Center for six years. The center, at 232 Broadway, offers educational and recreational opportunities primarily for minority youth.

"It is time for some new blood to take the center through the next six years," Bird said. "I still plan to be somewhat involved at the center. I am very concerned about the growth and outcome of the center."

During Bird's tenure the center embarked on fund-raising activities, initiated tutoring and peer facilitation, and started programs like "In the Name of Love," a self-improvement course for teens.

Civic Center teams also won four city league basketball championships.
