Three days of western activities this weekend will benefit Southeast Missouri Hospital Foundation and the hospital's Regional Cancer Center.

Highlights of the fund-raising event include a 28-event horse show, a grand parade featuring show horses, a benefit dinner and auction, and a western brunch and trail ride.

Money raised will help finance "We Can Weekend," an annual retreat for cancer patients and their families, and renovation costs involved with installation of a new linear accelerator in the center.

The linear accelerator, scheduled to become operational in January, will replace the oldest of the Cancer Center's two machines. Both are used to treat cancer with tightly directed radiation.

The weekend begins with a dinner and benefit auction Friday at Drury Lodge. Dinner entertainment will be provided by Bill Beussink's Fiddle Band.

On Saturday the horse show will be held at Arena Park at 8 a.m. Over 300 horses from a number of states are expected to compete. The grand parade begins at noon with parade viewing from the Arena Park grandstand.

In addition, a Civil War cavalry troop, a 4-H drill team, the Scott County Sheriff's Posse, western dancers, a Cherokee Indian demonstration and a parade of costumes are planned Saturday at the park.

On Sunday a barbecue lunch and trail ride for horse owners are planned. The ride is from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. with the chuckwagon lunch at 1 p.m. Cost for the event is $5 per person for the ride and $5 per person for lunch. To register for the ride, horse owners should call the hospital's foundation office.
