SCOTT CITY -- The fire department will sponsor several activities tomorrow to begin Fire Awareness Month.

A parade will start at 8:30 a.m., and run along Main Street from Mulberry Street to the city park.

The fire department will show its equipment and personnel.

The Cape Girardeau Fire Department is planning to bring its ladder truck. Other participants will be the Oran and NBC fire departments and ambulance personnel from North Scott and Cape counties.

City park activities, including games and prizes, will start at 9:30 a.m.

A special appearance by Smokey Bear, who is observing his 50th birthday this year, is planned.

"The citizens' fire muster in the park should be fun," said deputy fire chief Bill Crump. "Participants will get to see for themselves what it's like to be involved in fighting fires."

Muster activities will include a contest based on a home-exit drill, a bucket brigade and kids handling a fire hose.

The fire and ambulance equipment will be on display, along with an information booth.

All activities will be free, Crump said. Snacks and refreshments will be served. Attendance prizes will include smoke alarms.

"We want everyone to have some fun and learn a little bit at the same time," Crump said. "That's what it's all about."
