NEW MADRID -- New Madrid County voters turned out to overwhelmingly approve the installation of an enhanced 911 system.

The enhanced emergency calling system was approved by a vote of 4,016-1,226. The system will print the caller's phone number and address on a computer screen in emergency dispatching offices.

With about half of the county's voters turning out, Sam Pikey won the race for 2nd District commissioner over Jim Beis, 1,555-1,086.

Amendment 6 was strongly defeated with 3,313-2,392.

Amendment 7 was defeated by a whopping 4,269-1,406.

Democrat Joe Heckemeyer won the race for state representative of the 160th District with 143 votes to Republican Josh Bill's 107.

In the U.S. Senate race, Republican John Ashcroft received 3,344 votes, Democrat Alan Wheat 2,086 votes and Libertarian Bill Johnson 280 votes.

Incumbent Bill Emerson had no problem in New Madrid County, receiving 3,861 votes to Democrat Jay Thompson's 1,779 and Libertarian Greg Tlapek's 114.

Democratic challenger Steve Danner received 2,782 votes to narrowly defeat Republican incumbent Margaret Kelly in the state auditor's race. Libertarian Grant Stauffer received 146 votes.
