The Southeast Missourian incorrectly identified a photograph in Friday's edition. John M. Bartlett, vice president and senior portfolio manager of the Investment Management Group of Commerce Bank of St. Louis, was key speaker at a special economics seminar held at Drury Lodge and was the subject of the photograph.

"Investments -- The Long Term Outlook" was the topic of discussion during the seminar, which was sponsored by Commerce Bank. Local business people attended.

Charles Kupchella, Southeast Missouri State University's provost, said comments he made last Wednesday about the difficulty of obtaining a terminal degree while also trying to meet other requirements of tenure concerned faculty members in general, not department chairpersons.

As to the suggestion of granting tenure to college deans and department chairpersons upon their being hired by the university, Kupchella said such tenure would not be automatic. Such persons would still have to meet some criteria for their particular academic disciplines and such requests for tenure would have to be reviewed by various parties, including faculty, he said.

Kupchella said the idea of scrapping across-the-board pay raises in favor of a system based strictly on merit is still in the discussion stages at this point. The issue is now before the Faculty Senate.
