The Southeast Missouri State University Orchestra will present a symphonic orchestra at 8 p.m. Feb. 22 in Academic Auditorium.

The concert will feature students who were winners in the 1993-1994 Concerto and Aria Competition. Winners include: Keith Bales, trumpet; Yuko Fujiki, piano; Thomas Harte, string bass; Cary Nall, soprano; and Stephanie Rushin, flute. Pianist, Susan Ho, also a competition winner, will perform with the University Orchestra at its April 12 concert.

Student winners were selected based on their outstanding performances in a Nov. 19 competition. The students will perform concerto or aria solos accompanied by the University Orchestra.

Opening the program will be Dragonetti's Concerto in A Major for String Bass and Orchestra. This selection is Dragonetti's best known work and demonstrates his virtuosic abilities. Next, the orchestra will perform "Caro Nome" from the popular opera "Rigoletto" by the Italian composer Verdi. Concluding the first half of the program will be Mozart's Concerto in G Major, K. 453, which highlights Mozart's creative powers.

The second half of the program will begin with concertos by Neruda and Chaminade. Neruda's Concerto in E Flat Major for Trumpet and Orchestra is a lively, tuneful work which emphasizes the brilliance and dexterity of the classical trumpet.

The program will come to a close with Chaminade's Concertino for Flute and Orchestra. This concertino is one of the mainstays of the flutist's repertoire and is frequently heard and enjoyed by audiences everywhere.

The University Orchestra is under the direction of Dr. Sara Edgerton, assistant professor of music.

Tickets are $4 for the public and $2 for senior citizens and students. Admission is free with a Southeast I.D.
