AREA YOUTHS RECEIVE SALVATION ARMY AWARDS

The Salvation Army has announced that four area youths have earned special awards in the Girl Guard and Sunbeam Program.

Janet Buchanan, 15, of Tamms, Ill. received the Catherine Booth Award, the highest honor available to Girl Guards in the United States.

Buchanan was also among only 13 people in the nation to be selected to attend an International Girl Guard and Scout Camporee to be held near Edinburgh, Scotland, in July.

Buchanan, the daughter of Douglass and Jerrie Miller, has been active in the program for seven years. She is also an honor student at Egyptian High School where she is active in the Beta Club, Science Club and Photography Club.

Delores Bolen, 10, and Margaret McCaig, 9, of Cape Girardeau have earned the Commissioner's Sunbeam Award with Bronze Stars.

Kelly Miller, 8, of Tamms, Ill., won the Commissioner's Sunbeam Award with Bronze and Silver Stars.

These awards were presented Monday at a special Court of Honors at the Salvation Army.

The Girl Guard and Sunbeam program is an international organization sponsored by the Salvation Army, and is affiliated with Girl Guides. This character-building program is open to all girls from 6 to 18 years old.
