Teresa Birk has joined the Marcon Promotional Advertising sales staff.

Birk, of Jackson, is a graduate of Southeast Missouri State University. She previously worked as program coordinator for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

Marcon, a division of Horizon Screen Printing, 430 Broadway, is a promotional products business that specializes in sales incentives, employee programs and business promotions and gifts.

Dr. Ken Phillips has joined the Family Practice Specialty Center at Cape Girardeau.

Phillips, of McClure, Ill., recently graduated from the University of Illinois College of Medicine's family practice residency program at Methodist Medical Center of Illinois in Peoria.

Gary James Elders, formerly of Scott City, has been appointed manager of Wal-Mart in Plymouth, Ind.

Elders, son of Paul and Judy Elders of Scott City, is a graduate of Scott City High School and Southeast Missouri State University, with a degree in business management and finance.

Elders was previously assistant manager at Wal-Marts in Dexter, Fort Wayne, Ind., and Warsaw, Ind.

Ervin D. Smith, owner of Ervin's Clean Up and Repair Service, has completed the National Wood Flooring Association Comprehensive Installation and Technical Training School at St. Louis.

Training sessions included job site inspection and preparation, installation, sanding, finishing, custom flooring, trouble-shooting, repair work and salesmanship.

Smith received certification from the association.

Ben Tally, pharmacist and manager of Medicap Pharmacy in Cape Girardeau, recently received the Medicap Pharmacy President's Club Award, an honor for outstanding sales performance.

Tally received the award during the company's 10th annual meeting in Des Moines.

Medicap Pharmacies, headquartered at Des Moines, has 130 pharmacies open or under construction in 25 states.

Kenneth Story of Sikeston, who owns 95 grocery stores in eight states, has received the National Grocers Association's Spirit of America Award.

Story received the honor during the recent Piggly Wiggly Convention in Nashville, Tenn.

The award honors individuals in the food distribution industry who have provided leadership in the areas of community service and government relations.

Richard Cairns and Ken Volkerding, Lutheran Brotherhood district representatives from Cape Girardeau, recently attended a three-day professional development program at Indiana's Valparaiso University.

Cairns and Volkerding are associated with Lutheran Brotherhood's Pals Financial Group of St. Louis. They provide service to Lutherans in Southeast Missouri and Southern Illinois.

Gary E. Slaubaugh, president of the firm, and Roger R. Buckner and Mark W. Owens, technicians, were certified for Panasonic's KX-TD1232 Digital Super Hybrid telephone system. Janice R. Barrows, vice president of the firm, received certification for Panasonic's KX-T336 PBX Digital Hybrid system.

Gerald Nicholson of Cape Girardeau has been elected president of the Southeast Missouri Region of the Missouri State Medical Group Managers Association.

Other officers are Sarah Holt of Cape Girardeau, vice president; Madonna Sanders of Cape Girardeau, secretary; and Cindy Burcham, Poplar Bluff, treasurer.

The new group is comprised of about 20 members from Cape Girardeau, Poplar Bluff, Sikeston and Perryville. The next meeting will be held July 27 at the Holiday Inn in Cape Girardeau.

Layton Mayfield has retired from ABF Freight System Inc. after 37 years in the trucking industry.

Mayfield was a mechanic at the Cape Girardeau ABF terminal at the time of his retirement.

He started his career with the former Kimball Truck Line in Cape Girardeau in 1957. Kimball then worked for Delta Truck Line, which was acquired by ABF during the early 1960s.

ABF has more than 338 terminals in 50 states, nine Canadian provinces and Puerto Rico.

Bryan Bouldin has joined the Missouri Cattlemen's Association as director of member services.

Bouldin, a native of Marshfield, Mo., is a graduate of Southwest Missouri State University at Springfield with a bachelor of science degree in communications and a minor in agriculture.
