ILLINOIS SCHOOL ELECTIONS FEATURE MANY CHOICES

ANNA, Ill. -- Voters will have a long list of candidates when they go to the polls of the Anna-Jonesboro school election early next month.

Two incumbent board members, John Casper and Sonny Beanland, are not on the ballot, but incumbents Bill Jackson and Kenneth E. Kapper face seven challengers for the four vacancies. Challengers include Stephen Westbrooks, Bob Dover, Larry Birkhead, Debra Davis Jackson, Ronnie Mays, Robert Weilmuenster and Jimmy Keller.

Southern Illinois school board elections will be held Nov. 2. A total of 41 candidates can be found on the ballots from seven high schools in the Southern Illinois area, including 23 incumbents.

Eight candidates are running for four open seats at Cairo. Clarence Mallory, current president of the board, is joined by incumbent Lynn S. Byrd and six challengers, Sandra Denson, Joseph Holder, Devon M. Hinds, Charles E. Althoff, Kenneth R. Jones and Gary Walston. Incumbents not running are Steve Williams and Willie Mathews.

Century High School near Ullin counts seven candidates for four positions, including incumbents Enloe A. Clemons Sr., Bob Reichert and Guy H. Inman. Challengers are Kenneth Ray Taake, Lyn M. Chambers, Karen Goins and Danny K. Reagor. Incumbents Mike Ulen and Randy Cain are not seeking re-electon.

Six of the seven schools have contested races. All five candidates will be elected at Dongola, where incumbents Gregory Wasuleski, Carlyn Light, Tony Ulrich and Norman E. Dale will be elected to regular terms. Also on ballot is Kevin D. Cox, who will be elected to serve an unexpired two-year term. Cox is currently serving in a position which became vacant due to a resignation.

Five candidates are on the ballot at Egyptian, but one of them will be elected to fill an unexpired term. Lowell Mendenhall was appointed to the position a year ago when a board member resigned. Four candidates are on the ballot for the three regular four-year terms. They are incumbents Thomas L. Smothers, Lamar Houston Jr. and David Tucker. The fourth candidate is JoAnn Turner.

Four candidates are running for three vacancies at Meridian. Incumbents are Jerry Thurston, Linda Sue Porter Maborn and Thomas L. Nixon. Also on the ballot is Robert A. Spaulding.

All four incumbents are seeking re-election at Shawnee High School, near Wolf Lake, along with challenger Rollie Matlock. The incumbents are Richard Schaefer, Kenneth Mezo, Mrs. J. T. Jeanne Hill and Mitchel McLane.

Six candidates are on the ballot for two vacancies at Shawnee Community College, near Ullin. Incumbents are Don E. Patton and Zachary Hannan. Challengers are Manul Goins, Jerry Mount and Tommy Gentry.
