Workers Saturday were able to find and repair a damaged sewer line that last week backed up drains at Alma Schrader School.

Jim Dohogne, the school's maintenance man, said Saturday he and workers from Dutch Enterprises in Cape Girardeau discovered breaks in two sections of the sewer line.

"We had a hole in one of the sewer lines, which had deteriorated and collapsed, and we found one just outside of the building," Dohogne said. "We were able to get them all patched in and everything's working OK now."

The sewer break forced officials last week to alter lunch menus because the school's dishwasher wouldn't drain properly.

David Giles, Alma Schrader's principal, said the school was forced to serve lunch on disposable trays because of the inability to use the dishwasher.

"We had the same menu, but had to change the days because we weren't able to serve some items on the disposable trays. It was something we just had to adapt to," Giles said.

Dohogne said a three-by-nine feet section of the concrete floor in the kitchen had to be removed to get at the sewer break. But, he added, the floor will be repaired today and the kitchen should be back in commission Tuesday.

"It's all basically patched back in, but it's going to take a couple of days for the kitchen to be ready again," Dohogne said.
