SCOTT CITY -- A 70-year-old Cape Girardeau woman who had just finished an evening of bingo at the VFW Home was killed and another woman was critically injured when they were struck by a pickup truck while crossing Main Street in heavy rain Saturday night.

Bonnie Beatrice Young of 1848 Woodlawn Ave. was pronounced dead at St. Francis Medical Center after the 10:15 p.m. accident. It occurred at 1408 Main St., an area that Scott City police say is lighted as well as the rest of the street.

Pat Holder, 54, of Scott City was hit by the truck at the same time as Young. She also was taken to St. Francis Medical Center and was listed in critical but stable condition Sunday night.

Coroner Scott Amick said Young apparently slipped and fell on the wet pavement while crossing the street. The truck ran into the two women while Young was trying to get up, Amick said.

Amick said Young sustained chest and head injuries.

"Everything seems to be consistent with it being an accident," Amick said.

Officer John Blakely said the two women were crossing the street to the parking lot on the other side when the accident occurred. They already had crossed one lane when they were struck by the white early model truck, Blakely said.

He said there is no crosswalk where the women were crossing the street, but that one is in the area.

Blakely said a number of people who were leaving the bingo game witnessed the accident and provided police with statements.

The 17-year-old driver, who was alone and stopped after the accident, has not been charged and was not identified by the police.

Police Chief Robert Elledge said it may be known early this week if Prosecuting Attorney Cristy Baker-Neel will file charges.

"I hope to present the case to the prosecutor (Monday) morning," he said.
