Friday is Grandparents Day, an annual event that allows grandparents to visit the schools their grandchildren attend.

"We also invite grandparents to stay for lunch if they like," said Richard Bollwerk, director of elementary education. "It is a good opportunity for them to spend some time with their grandchildren."

Anyone who wants to stay for lunch should contact the particular school he or she is planning to visit so the school can get an accurate lunch count, Bollwerk said. Grandparents need to notify the schools before Friday.

The notification only applies to lunch. Grandparents don't have to notify the schools just to visit the classrooms Friday.

Grandparents Day involves all the schools in the Cape Girardeau public school system, although the greatest participation is generally at the elementary school level, Bollwerk said.

"A lot of classrooms will have special activities. I know this is an event the kids look forward to," said Bollwerk.
