MIZZOU HONORS FORMER JOURNALISM TEACHER

COLUMBIA -- Elizabeth Lockhart, former journalism teacher at Cape Central High School, was honored at the University of Missouri-Columbia recently for her outstanding contributions to scholastic journalism.

Lockhart was the keynote speaker at the annual spring awards day at the university, attended by high school journalists and their teachers from all over the state.

Lockhart was presented with the Taft Award, recognizing career achievement. The award is jointly sponsored by the Missouri Interscholastic Press Association and the Missouri Journalism Education Association.

Lockhart left Central High School in late January, after teaching there and sponsoring the newspaper and yearbook for more than 20 years, to take a job with Walsworth Publishing. She served scholastic journalism groups in numerous capacities at the regional, state and national levels during her teaching career.

The Taft Award was given to Lockhart in recognition of her contributions; especially her efforts to help other journalism teachers. She was one of the founders of the Southeast Missouri Scholastic Press Association and served as Missouri's state director of the Journalism Education Association for 12 years.
