ST. FRANCIS GETS GIFT OF $25,000

A gift of $25,000 to St. Francis Medical Center from the estate of Clara D. Newman has been announced by St. Francis Foundation President Van. H. Puls.

Newman, who died last fall at age 95, was a retired nurse and lifelong resident of Charleston. She was a graduate of the Jewish Hospital School of Nursing in St. Louis and spent most of her life as a county health nurse in Mississippi County.

"It was Mrs. Newsman's wish that St. Francis use this gift to help people in their time of need," said Puls.

The foundation has chosen to use a portion of the estate gift to fund a perpetual scholarship in her memory. The scholarship will be known as the Clara D. Newman Nursing Scholarship and will be presented annually to a nursing student from the area.

The balance of the $25,000 will be used to purchase a hemodialysis unit for the St. Francis Critical Care Center. The equipment will benefit intensive care patients suffering from renal failure.
