A number of area teenagers have been selected to attend the American Legion Boys State of Missouri. It will be held Saturday through June 19 on the campus of Central Missouri State University At Warrensburg. Those attending learn more about the workings of government through hands-on experience. It is run as a democracy, and all participants may vote and are eligible to hold office...

A number of area teenagers have been selected to attend the American Legion Boys State of Missouri. It will be held Saturday through June 19 on the campus of Central Missouri State University At Warrensburg.

Those attending learn more about the workings of government through hands-on experience. It is run as a democracy, and all participants may vote and are eligible to hold office.

A total of 90 boys from Southeast Missouri will attend. Among local area boys participating are:

Brian Pingel, a student at Cape Girardeau Central High School, is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Marty Roth and the late Dwight Pingel. Pingel has been involved in National Honor Society, the marching and concert bands, junior varsity basketball, Spanish Club and St. Andrew Lutheran Church and youth group. He was also nominated for Who's Who Among American High School Students.

Shawn Joseph Pemberton, a student at Cape Girardeau Central High School, is the son of Ken and Brenda Pemberton. He is a member of the Letterman's Club, Latin Club and has been named to Who's Who Among American High School Students. He is active in varsity football and baseball. Pemberton was named to the First Team All-Conference and First Team All-District as a defensive back and was voted most valuable defensive back by his teammates. He is a member of St. Vincent de Paul Church.

Andrew C. Trueblood, a student at Cape Girardeau Central High School, is the son of Dr. and Mrs. Michael Trueblood. He is a member of Red Dagger Drama Club, Scholar Bowl, Chemistry Bowl, Knowledge Master, National Honor Society, and a member of the outstanding delegation at the Mock United Nations for 1992 and 1993. He served as county coroner at Youth in Government Day in 1993. He attended Missouri Scholars' Academy in 1992 and was named to Who's Who Among American High School Students.

Victor B. Patterson, a student at Notre Dame High School, is the son of Victor and Letty Patterson. He has been a member of the basketball team and competed in the Scholar Bowl. He was nominated by the Rotary Club to attend a business seminar and is a candidate to attend Freedom Forum at Southeast Missouri State University this summer.

David Bruenderman, a student at Notre Dame High School, is the son of Bernard and Joyce Bruenderman. He is a member of the varsity basketball team and the Pep Club. He plays summer league basketball and competes in the Missouri Show Me Games. Bruenderman has been active in promoting drug and alcohol free proms and parties at Notre Dame.

Michael P. Steele, a student at Cape Girardeau Central High School, is the son of Richard and Gayle Steele. He is a member of the Patriotic Club, chamber choir and has been on the honor roll. He is a member of the soccer and track teams and recently was awarded All-State recognition in track as a silver medalist in the Class 4A pole vault. He is listed in Who's Who in American High Schools, is a member of Young Life and attends First Christian Church.

Ty Eggimann, a student at Cape Girardeau Central High School, is the son of Brad and Shari Eggimann. He is a three-year letterman in varsity soccer and played on the district championship team in 1992. He is also a two-year letterman on the varsity golf team. He was named to Who's Who Among American High School Students, is a member of Young Life and is listed on the B honor roll.

Jason K. Leggett, a student at Cape Girardeau Central High School, is the son of Tom and Florence Leggett. He is a member of CASA, the Spanish Club, Knowledge Master and Scholar Bowl. He is also a member of the Maple Avenue United Methodist Church, where he is president of the youth group.

Ryan Jones, a student at Notre Dame High School, is the son of Frank and Gail Jones. He is involved in community service work and video tapes high school basketball games. He is also an active member of St. Vincent de Paul Church.

Scott Roe, a student at Notre Dame High School, is the son of Jerry and Mary Roe. He is a B honor roll student, a member of the varsity soccer team and an avid golfer. For three years, he has participated in the Junior PGA program and plans to compete on Notre Dame's first school-sponsored golf team next year.

Matthew C. Shivelbine, a student at Cape Girardeau Central High School, is the son of Mike and Kathy Shivelbine. He is on the A honor roll, second vice president of the National Honor Society, vice president of the International Thespian Society, drum major for the varsity marching band, a member of concert band, jazz band and assistant concertmaster of the orchestra, a member of Red Dagger and Scholar Bowl. He is an Eagle Scout and has been named to Who's Who Among American High School Students and Missouri Ambassadors of Music.

Greg Blattner, a student at Cape Girardeau Central High School, is the son of J. Tim Blattner of Cape Girardeau and Alice Willey of Phoenix, Ariz. He represented Central High in math bowl this year and the chemistry bowl the past two years. Blattner is pursing Eagle Scout rank with the Boy Scouts. He competes in cross country, swimming and track and enjoys participating in triathalons. He is a member of Westminister Presbyterian Church and will study in Denmark next year as a Rotary Exchange student.

Daniel Newton, a student at Notre Dame High School, is the son of Ken and Connie Newton. Newton has been involved in Future Business Leaders of America, junior varsity and varsity basketball, newspaper and yearbook staffs, and Scholar Bowl.

Sponsors of these students include the American Legion Post 63; the Elks Lodge 639; the Knights of Columbus; Cape Girardeau Rotary Club; Cape Girardeau Exchange Club; and the Cape Girardeau Lions Club.
