On the heels of Saturday's seat-belt safety checkpoint, Cape Girardeau police did a seat-belt survey Wednesday and found more people than ever buckling up.

Sharee Galnore, head of the police community traffic safety program, said they found 74.4 percent compliance with state seat-belt laws within the city.

"That's more than we've ever had before," Galnore said. "The national goal was to have 75 percent compliance by 1995; we're almost there now."

Cape Girardeau has its own goal to reach an 80 percent compliance rate with state laws within the next couple of years.
