The Cargill Foundation is sponsoring 250, $1,000 scholarships for high school seniors from U.S. farm families.

The number of scholarships has been increased from 200 last year to 250 this year.

"The program has been so favorably accepted throughout the rural community that we decided to expand it this year," said Barney Saunders, president of the Cargill Foundation.

The Cargill Scholarship Program for Rural America is open to all high school seniors who will graduate next spring and who come from families that derive at least half of their income from farming.

Candidates must enroll full time next fall at an accredited two- or four-year college, university or vocational-technical school.

Selection for the scholarships is handled by the National Future Farmers of America organization, although applicants need not be FFA members.

Information and application forms are available at any Cargill office or high school FFA department.

Application deadline is March 2.
