Altenthal is a 1976 graduate of Cape Girardeau Central High School and is pursuing a bachelor's degree in vocational home economics at Southeast Missouri State University.

She is on the dean's honor list and is a member of Kappa Delta Pi, Alpha Chi and Omicron Nu honor societies. She and her husband, Brad, have three children, Jennifer, 14, Melissa, 11, and Lance, 4.

The local Beta Iota chapter awards a scholarship each year to someone pursuing a career in education.
