State and federal officials will today recognize 14 Cape Girardeau organizations, businesses, departments and a school for making the state and national "70 percent+Honor Roll" for safety belt use.

The event is scheduled for noon at the Cape Girardeau Holiday Inn. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the Missouri Division of Highway Safety will make presentations to those who qualify during the "Traffic Safety Challenge" workshop sponsored by the Missouri Coalition for Safety Belt Use and the Missouri Division of Highway Safety.

Honored will be the Cape Girardeau Police Department; Wal-Mart; Alma Schrader School; Southeast Missouri State University Department of Public Safety; Boatmen's Bank; Jerry W. Welch Insurance Agency; Easter Seal Society, Southeast Region; Cape Girardeau County Public Health Center; Missouri Division of Child Support Enforcement; O'Loughlin, O'Loughlin, and McManaman, Attorneys at Law; Otahki Girl Scout Council; Advertising Specialty Consultants; PDQ Quality Printing; and Jerry Huskey, CPA.

Cape Girardeau Community Traffic Safety Coordinator Sharee Galnore said the award honors the recipient for reaching the 70 percent safety belt usage rate.

Galnore said the traffic safety program hasn't done a community-wide seat belt use survey recently. She said a survey will probably be done here in the spring.
