A number of area students have been nominated for entrance into military service academies later this year. U.S. Rep. Bill Emerson's nominees will be considered and selected by the academies for appointment to the class entering in July 1992. The selections were made on the basis of each student's ACT and, or, SAT test score, high school class standing and an evaluation of overall qualifications by Emerson's Academic Advisory Board...

A number of area students have been nominated for entrance into military service academies later this year.

U.S. Rep. Bill Emerson's nominees will be considered and selected by the academies for appointment to the class entering in July 1992.

The selections were made on the basis of each student's ACT and, or, SAT test score, high school class standing and an evaluation of overall qualifications by Emerson's Academic Advisory Board.

This year's board members are Joe Layden, Bonne Terre, editor of the Flat River Daily Journal; Clyde Southern, Pemiscot County farmer; Paul Childers, West Plains banker; Marsha Limbaugh, Cape Girardeau businesswoman; Michael Greene, Winona superintendent of schools; and Col. Ed Owsley, retired military, who served as chairman.

The nominees for 1992 are:

U.S. Military Academy, West Point, New York, (two principals allowed for the class of 1992: Principal, David Ward, son of Samuel and Julia Ward of West Plains; first alternate, Gena Chung, daughter of Drs. Kap Eun and Young Ran Chung of Farmington; second alternate, Tito Pope, son of Herman and Phai Pope of Rolla.

Principal: Neil Caskey, son of Jim and Libby Caskey of Sikeston; first alternate: Lance VanZandt, son of Guy and Claudia Davis of Perryville; other alternates: Anthony Gibbs, son of Tommie and Phyllis Gibbs of Viburnum; Justin Cremer, son of Raymond and Marcella Cremer of Viburnum; and Austin Tinsley IV, son of Austin and Bobbie Tinsley of Williamsville.

U.S. Naval Academy, Annapolis, Md. (four principals allowed for the class of 1992): Principal, L.G. Black IV, son of Lanie and Ann Black of Charleston; first alternate, Jerry Rogers, son of Jesse and Phyllis Rogers of West Plains.

Byrd, son of Michael J. and Margit Byrd of Jackson; second alternate: Jason F. Forrest, son of Joe and Sarah Forrest of Charleston;

Principal: Seth Kaeding, son of Loyal and Tessa Kaeding of Steelville.

Merchant Marine Academy, Kings Point, N.Y.: Principals, Patrick Mooney, son of William and Katie Mooney of Bourbon; Michael L. Byrd, son of Michael J. and Margit Byrd of Jackson; Justin Cremer, son of Raymond and Marcella Cremer of Viburnum; and Jerry Rogers, son of Jesse and Phyllis Rogers of West Plains.
