WICKLIFFE, Ky. John A. Luke, president and chief executive officer of Westvaco Corp., a manufacturer of paper, packaging and specialty chemicals, has received the Wall Street Transcript's Silver Award in the paper industry category.

Silver awards are presented to chief executive officers in all industries who are judged on steps they have taken to enhance the overall value of their enterprises for the benefit of stockholders.

A Westvaco paper mill is situated along the Mississippi River south of Wickliffe, about 40 miles southeast of Cape Girardeau.

Dennis E. Drum, formerly of Cape Girardeau, recently received a Special Act Award from the Defense Mapping Agency Aerospace Center in St. Louis.

The award is presented to Aerospace Center employees whose special actions have contributed significantly to agency operations.

Susan Lewis, nurse manager of medical progressive care at Southeast Missouri Hospital, has been elected president of the 200-member Missouri Council of Nurse Managers.

A graduate of the Lutheran Medical Center School of Nursing in St. Louis, Lewis is pursuing a bachelor of science degree in nursing at Southeast Missouri State University. She is certified with the American Nurses Association in medical-surgical nursing.

She is a member of the American Heart Association, American Association of Critical Care Nurses, American Organization of Nurse Executives, and the Missouri Nurses Association. She was included in "Who's Who in American Nursing" in 1991.

Maria Thompson and Martha Sue Chanley have passed the American Nurses Association gerontological nursing certification examination.

Thompson, of Scott City, and Chanley, of East Prairie, are employed at the Missouri Veterans Home in Cape Girardeau. Thompson is director of nursing services and Chanley is a shift supervisor.

Dr. Robert Kessinger, a Cape Girardeau chiropractor, recently attended an upper cervical specific conference in Spartanburg, S.C. Dr. Micheal Kale conducted the conference.

Kessinger, who is certified in upper cervical specific chiropractic, has been appointed to the executive board of the Kale Chiropractic Research Council. He will attend a meeting of the board in Quebec, Canada, in late February.

Kessinger, who maintains a private practice at 1424 Kurre Lane, also has become an instructor to teach specific chiropractic. A certification course will be held this year in St. Louis. It is open to all doctors of chiropractic.

Pamela R. Selinger, infection control practitioner and director of central services at Southeast Missouri Hospital, has completed requirements for infection control certification through the Certification Board of Infection Control.

Selinger works throughout the hospital to prevent the spread of infection among personnel and patients and educates health care workers about infection control standards. She has worked at Southeast since fall 1987.

She earned her associate degree in nursing at Jefferson College, attended Southeast Missouri State University, and is enrolled in Webster University's BSN completion program.

David L. Hahs and Herbert R. Sheets were honored by Northwestern Mutual Life during the firm's annual awards dinner recently.

Agents and staff of the firm attended the banquet at the Cape Girardeau Country Club. It was hosted by district agent and Mrs. T. Ronald Hahs.

David Hahs was cited as leader in sales of the local district agency for 1991, having produced $14,570,000 of volume with $220,161 in new premiums. He has been with the firm since 1972. Hahs, his wife, Candy, and sons, Brandon and Clayton, reside in Cape Girardeau.

Sheets, of Farmington, was presented the "Bull 'O the Wood" trophy for the largest percentage increase in sales over his quota for the last six months of 1991. He produced 179 percent of his goal.

The local agency was founded 44 years ago by M. Luther Hahs. Luther Hahs and his wife, Catherine, were special guests at the dinner. The agency is now headed by T. Ronald Hahs.
