J.J. Haycraft, son of Gordon and Marti Haycraft, recently placed first in the Evening Optimist Club essay contest.
Haycraft is a junior at Central High School. His essay on "The Challenge of a Free Society" will be submitted to the Optimist district competition, which includes the Cape Girardeau area.
The district winner will be receive an all-expense paid trip to the Freedom Foundation at Valley Forge, Penn. where a four-day conference on freedom and leadership will be held. This conference is funded by the Optimist International Foundation.
Taking second place in the essay contest was Katie Stein, daughter of Neil and Carolyn Stein and placing third was Kristi Jackson, daughter of Steve and Terri Jackson. Both are juniors at Cape Central High School.
