For the first time in its history, the Southeast Missouri State University Debate Team has received national ranking.

The team is ranked 50th in the nation in a January report from the national office of the Cross Examination Debate Association.

More than 300 colleges and universities are active in the organization, which rates the top 50 debate programs in the country.

In addition, the Southeast team is ranked 10th in the six-state South Central region, just points behind Louisiana State University. The region includes 61 colleges and universities competing in intercollegiate debate.

"As the squad begins its second semester of competition, we look forward to continuing this high level of success," said Michael R. Dickman, director of Southeast's Forensics Program.

"Our students have done a fine job of representing the university, and I am confident that their performance will continue to reflect the excellent level of20academics here at Southeast Missouri State University."
