Top students at area high schools have garnered awards and scholarships as valedictorians and salutatorians for 1992 graduating classes.

Cape Central

Deborah Soun Chung has been named valedictorian and Mala Ahuja has been named salutatorian of the senior class at Cape Girardeau Central High School.

Chung, the daughter of Dr. Woo-Sik and Youn Chung, was a first place winner at the Math Field Day at Southeast Missouri State University, Downtown Rotary Student of the Month, Outstanding Senior and recipient of the Scholastic Achievement Award. She was also second runner up for Cape Girardeau County's Young Woman of the Year.

Chung plans to attend the University of Missouri-Columbia. She has received a Curators Scholarship, the Edward and Ellen Kniep Memorial Scholarship, a Wal-Mart Foundation Scholarship and a Young Woman of the Year Scholarship.

Ahuja, daughter of Dr. Mangho and Mevi Ahuja, was a National Merit Finalist and won first place in the District Lincoln Douglas Debate.

Ahuja plans to attend Washington University in St. Louis. She has received a Washington University Scholarship, a Bright Flight Scholarship and a Missouri Academic Grant.

Notre Dame

Christy Leanne Vandeven is valedictorian and Julie Therese Kirchdoerfer is salutatorian of the senior class at Notre Dame High School.

Vandeven, the daughter of James and Alice Vandeven of Cape Girardeau, was a member of SADD, National Honor Society, Pep Club, FBLA and participated in the annual school musical.

She plans to attend the St. Louis College of Pharmacy, where she was awarded a Faculty Memorial Scholarship and Bright Flight Scholarship.

Kirchdoerfer, the daughter of Joe and Mildred Kirchdoerfer, was a member of SADD, National Honor Society, French Club and participated in the annual school musical. She was also named Rotary Student of the Month.

She has been awarded a Missouri State Leadership scholarship, Cargill Scholarship and Regent's Scholarship to Southeast Missouri State University. She plans to attend Southeast, possibly continuing her education in medical school.

Jackson High

Samuel James Eatherton has been named valedictorian and Brandy Ann Hoffman is salutatorian at Jackson High School.

Eatherton, the son of the Rev. and Mrs. Lawrence Eatherton, was a member of the Student Council, treasurer of the National Honor Society, president of the Drama Club, member of the marching, symphonic and jazz bands, and member of the Squawler newspaper staff.

Eatherton plans to attend Concordia College in Seward, Neb. He has received a Wal-Mart Foundation Scholarship, AAL All-College Scholarship, Jackson High School All American Student Award. He also received the following scholarships to Concordia College: music talent, alumni, board of regents, professional church work and presidential award.

Hoffman, daughter of Vonda Hoffman Glodo and the late Dallas Glodo, was yearbook editor, fall homecoming queen, received the George Washington Carver Award, a college preparatory studies certificate, and a member of the All-District Band, the Just Say No club, the Spanish Club, the Photography Club and SADD.

Hoffman plans to attend Southeast Missouri State University. She has received a regents scholarship and a Missouri Leadership Award to attend Southeast, a curators scholarship and a Missouri Higher Education Scholarship to the University of Missouri-Columbia and a Bright Flight Scholarship.

Scott City

Jennifer Elizabeth Bertrand is valedictorian and Emily Wipfler is salutatorian at Scott City High School.

Bertrand, daughter of Larry and Connie Bertrand, received the Social Studies Award, the Speech Award, the George Washington Carver Outstanding Achievement Award, Presidential Academic Fitness Award and a College Preparatory Studies Certificate.

Bertrand plans to attend Southeast Missouri State University. She has received a Regents Scholarship, Scott City Federation of Teachers Scholarship. She also received a regents scholarship to Central Missouri State, an MU Scholar Scholarship and a Chancellor's Leadership Scholarship to the University of Missouri and Hannibal-Lagrange Academic Scholarship.

Wipfler, daughter of Charles G. and Elaine S. Wipfler, received the English Award, the Calculus Award the Computer Math Award, the Bausch & Lomb Honorary Science Award, the George Washington Carver Outstanding Achievement Award, Presidential Academic Fitness Award, and the College Preparatory Studies Award.

Wipfler plans to attend Southeast Missouri State University and has received a regents scholarship.

Chaffee High

Kristen Martin is the valedictorian and Stephanie Pfefferkorn is the salutatorian of Chaffee High School.

Martin is the daughter of Larry and Janice Martin of Chaffee.

Her school activities include: basketball, softball, volleyball, track and cheerleading. She was president of the student council and French club. She received the Presidential Academic Fitness Award, the Geroge Washington Carver Award and the Army Scholar-Athlete Award.

Martin plans to attend Drury College in Springfield, Mo. this fall, majoring in architecture. She received the Elks Foundation Scholarship, an academic scholarship, dean's scholarship and leadership award to Drury College.

Pfefferkorn is the daughter of Paul and Jane Pfefferkorn of Chaffee. Her school activities included: basketball, volleyball and track, SADD, Varsity Club, and French Club.

She was awarded the Chaffee Alumni Scholarship. This fall, she plans to attend St. Louis College of Pharmacy.

Oak Ridge

Amy McMillan is valedictorian and Michele Lynn Abrisz is salutatorian of Oak Ridge High School's class of 1992.

McMillan, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Marvin McMillan of Friedheim, was senior class president, vice-president of Pep Club, and president of the National Honor Society. She attended Girl's State, Youth in Government, and was named to Who's Who Among American High School Students.

She was the recipient of the DAR Good Citizens Medal and was active in cheerleading, volleyball, softball, band, yearbook, Spanish Club, Business Club and Student Council.

She plans to attend Southeast Missouri State University and has received a President's Scholarship.

Abrisz is senior class vice-president, vice president of National Honor Society, and was secretary of Student Council her junior year. She was active in Pep Club, SADD, FHA, FBLA, Science Club, Spanish Club, band and was drum majorette.

She was named to Who's Who Among American High School Students, attended the Missouri Freedom Forum. She was active in cheerleading, softball and was a candidate for South Cape County Young Woman of the Year.

She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Quentin Pawling of St. Joseph and Mr. Paul Abrisz of Rogers, Ariz. She plans to attend Southeast Missouri State University, majoring in business, and has received a President's Scholarship.

Oran High School

Angela Lynn Hogan is valedictorian and Sarah Sindle is salutatorian of the class of 1992 at Oran High School.

Hogan, the daughter of Leroy and Phyllis Hogan of Oran, was active in FBLA, FHA, Library Club, Beta Club, volleyball and cheerleading. She was coordinator of senior class fund raisers and the senior class trip.

She plans to attend the University of Missouri-Columbia, majoring in aerospace engineering and communications. She was awarded a UMC Curator's Scholarship, and was offered a President's Scholarship and Missouri Leadership Award at Southeast Missouri State University. Her ambition is to work for NASA as a communications correspondent.

Sindle, the daughter of James and Suzanne Sindle of Oran, was active in FBLA, FHA, Beta Club, Library Club, marching and concert band basketball, volleyball. She was a Lion's Club basketball coach, class president her sophomore year, and homecoming queen her junior year. She is senior class vice-president.

Sindle plans to attend Southeast Missouri State University, majoring in psychology. She was awarded a President's Scholarship.

Kelly High School

Rachel Record is valedictorian and Kristen Anglin is salutatorian of the graduating class at Thomas W. Kelly High School in Benton.

Record was a member of FHA, Beta Club, Science Club, FBLA, Foreign Language Club, SADD, Pep Club and chorus. She held local and state offices in FHA, and attended the Hugh O'Brian Leadership seminar as an ambassador and junior counselor.

Record was awarded a four-year, $25,000 scholarship from the Missouri State Beta Club. She plans to attend Northeast Missouri State University at Kirksville and major in nursing. She is the daughter of Roger and Constance Record of Benton.

Anglin is the daughter of Keith and Kathy Anglin of Sikeston. She was involved in FHA, Beta Club, Science Club, FFA, SADD, Pep Club and cheerleading.

She has been awarded a Dean's Scholarship from Saint Louis University, where she plans to major in occupational therapy. She was also awarded a scholarship from Missouri Delta Medical Center in Sikeston.

Scott County Central

Cynthia Jo Bramlett is valedictorian and Tracy Lavette Perkins is salutatorian of the graduating class at Scott County Central High School at Morley.

Bramlett was president of Beta Club, president of FHA, a member of FBLA, History Club, the varsity softball team, her church youth group and Who's Who Among American High School Students.

She also received the United State Achievement Award, a Bright Flight Scholarship and Good Citizens Award.

The daughter of Harold and Anita Bramlett of Vanduser, she plans to attend Southwest Baptist University in Bolivar and major in Physical Therapy.

Perkins was active in Beta Club, Student Council, band and cadet teaching. She received a Principal Scholarship and plans to attend Southeast Missouri State University, majoring in business and accounting. She is the daughter of Wilma Perkins Blackmon of Sikeston and Abe Williams of St. Louis.

Delta High School

Ryan Joseph Burnett is valedictorian and Joann Rebekah Schmitt is salutatorian of Delta High School's class of 1992.

Burnett was active in FBLA, basketball, National Honor Society, Pep Club, jazz band and was senior class treasurer.

He has received a Governor's Scholarship to Southeast Missouri State University, Bright Flight Scholarship and a University of Missouri Curator's Scholarship. He plans to attend Southeast and then transfer to the University of Missouri at Rolla to complete an engineering degree.

He is the son of Albert and Ruth Burnett of Delta.

Schmitt was a member of National Honor Society, FBLA, band, SADD and was treasurer of FFA. She plans to attend Southeast Missouri State University, where she received a Regent's Scholarship. She is the daughter of Charles and Dorothy Schmitt of Leopold.

Woodland High

Darren Charles Acup is valedictorian and Donna Chandler is salutatorian at Woodland High School.

Acup, the son of Bill and Louise Acup of Glen Allen, was president of Student Council, a member of Beta Club, Woodland Association of Students Trying to End Drugs, and was president of Harmony Congregational Youth Group.

He received the Optimists Youth Appreciation Award his junior and senior years.

Acup plans to attend Southeast Missouri State University, where he was awarded a Regent's Scholarship.

Chandler, daughter of John and Patsy Chandler, was a member of the basketball team, the Future Homemakers of America and Beta Club.

She plans to attend Southeast Missouri State University and has accepted a Bright Flight scholarship and a governors scholarship. She also received a curators scholarship to attend the University of Missouri and a presidents scholarship to attend Southwest Missouri State University.

Zalma High

Kimberly Ann Walker is valedictorian and Laura Jean Maloney is salutatorian of Zalma High School's class of 1992.

Walker, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Walker of Arab, was senior class president and was a member of FHA, Beta Club, SADD, TREND, Student Council and the A Club.

She was an all-state volleyball player and a member of the Academic All-Star Volleyball Team.

She has been recognized by Who's Who Among American High School Students and has received a President's Scholarship to Southeast Missouri State University, where she will major in nursing.

Maloney is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Archie Maloney of Puxico. She was active in FHA, Beta Club, the A Club, SADD, TREND, and was class treasurer and secretary. She was also a member of the Academic All-State Volleyball Team.

Maloney was recognized by Who's Who Among American High School Students and received a Security Bank of Bollinger County scholarship.

She plans to attend DeVry Institute of Technology and major in business operations.

Perryville High

Marty J. Kassulke is the valedictorian and Natalie Renee Schuessler is salutatorian of Perryville High School's class of 1992.

Kassulke is the son of Rev. Willard and Carolyn Kassulke. He has received several scholarships, including awards from Wal-Mart, the Booster Club, Vernon Meyr Valedictorian Scholarship, Bright Flight and Aid Association to Lutherans.

Kassulke plans to attend Georgia Institute of Technology and major in aerospace Engineering.

Schuessler is the daughter of Robert and Janet Schuessler. Scholarships she received include the Elks Scholarship, Glen Fairchild Memorial Scholarship, Aid Association to Lutherans and Lutheran Brotherhood Scholarship.

She plans to attend Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kan., and major in architecture.

St. Vincent High

Jennifer Ann Kiefer is valedictorian and Christopher Michael Buerck is the salutatorian at St. Vincent High School in Perryville.

Kiefer was active in Pep Club, SADD, the school newspaper, Junior Achievement, Spanish Club, National Honor Society and Parish Youth Group.

She was editor-in-chief of the school yearbook, youth reporter for the St. Louis Review, Parish School of Religion teacher's aide, high school reporter for the Perryville newspaper and on the executive committee for Project Graduation.

She is the daughter of Troy and Anna Kiefer of Perryville.

Buerck was active in Distributive Education Clubs of America (DECA), National Honors Society (NHS), Students Against Driving Drunk (SADD), and class representative of Student Council.

He was offered the following scholarships: Missouri Bright Flight, Curators Scholarship, and an engineering scholarship for the University of Missouri-Columbia. He plans to attend the University of Missouri-Columbia and major in mechanical engineering. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Melvin J. Buerck of Perryville.

Meadow Heights

Howard Zahner is valedictorian and Nancy Mungle is salutatorian at Meadow Heights High School.

Zahner, son of Wayne and Shirley Zahner, was a member of the Beta Club, Student Council, Science Club, SADD and Who's Who Among High School Students.

Zahner plans to attend Southeast Missouri State University. He has received a regents scholarship and the Missouri Leadership Award.

Mungle, John and Janet Mungle, was a member of Beta Club, Future Homemakers of America, the band and the flag corps. She played volleyball and softball.

Mungle plans to attend Murray State University in Murray, Ky. and has received a scholarship to attend the university.

Meridian High

Wardell Gene Levy is valedictorian and Jamie Lynn Spaulding is salutatorian of the class of 1992 at Meridian High School in Mounds, Ill.

Levy was active in basketball, track and cross-country. He was member of National Honor Society and Beta Club.

He has received the DAR Good Citizen's Award, Tandy Technology Scholarship, Cairo Rotary Scholarship, National Merit Award and four-year scholarships from the U.S. Air Force and U.S. Navy ROTC programs.

He plans to attend Morehouse College in Atlanta and major in computer engineering. After graduation he plans to accept Naval Officer Commission.

He is the son of Wardell Levy Sr. of Mounds and Alice Levy of Bloomington, Ill.

Spaulding is president of National Honor Society, a member of Beta Club, Student Council, band and the cheerleading squad.

She has received the Presidential Academic Fitness Award, named All-American Scholar by the U.S. Achievement Academy, and a national award winner for cheerleading and English by the United States Achievement Academy.

She was a national semi-finalist in the Coca-Cola Scholars Program, an Illinois State Scholar, a member of Who's Who Among America High School Students and has received the Danforth "I Dare You" award.

She plans to attend Southeast Missouri State University, where she was awarded a Regent's Scholarship and Foundation Leadership Award. After graduation, she plans to attend the University of Mississippi Law School.

She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Spaulding of Villa Ridge, Ill.

Shawnee High

Amy D. Hill Mouser is valedictorian and Christopher Aaron Peeler is salutatorian of the class of 1992 at Shawnee High School in Wolf Lake, Ill.

Mouser was active in Beta Club, FHA, Student Tutoring Program and honor band. She is a Voice of Democracy school winner and was given the Rotary Club Student of the Quarter award, is recognized in Who's Who Among American High School Students and is an Illinois State Scholar.

She is the daughter of Bonnie and Avery Mouser of McClure and Kenneth Hill of East Cape Girardeau, Ill. She plans to attend Southeast Missouri State University.

Peeler was active in baseball, basketball, Beta Club and band. He was named to Who's Who Among America High School Students, a Southern Illinois High Achiever and Rotary Club Student of the Month.

He is the son of Robert and Trudy Peeler of McClure and plans to attend Shawnee Community College.

Cairo High School

Miles C. Williams is valedictorian and April Jackson is salutatorian of Cairo High School's class of 1992.

Williams was active in football, tennis, Beta Club, Spanish Club, Science Club, Math Team, JETS, yearbook, Principal Advisory Board and Executive Council.

Scholarships include National Honor Society, Illinois State Scholar, Trustee Scholarship to Maryville University, Walmart Scholarship, Rotary Scholarship and Trustee Scholarship at Freed-Hardeman University.

He plans to attend Maryville University in St. Louis, where he will study actuarial science.

He is the son of Barbara and Thomas Williams.

Jackson was active in the Student Olympaid Team, Student Council, National Honor Society, Beta Club, JETS, Junior Executive Council, Senior Executive Council, band, Math Team, yearbook, cheerleading, choir, student newspaper, Science Club and Scholar Bowl.

She was homecoming queen her senior year and was named Cairo Riverboat Queen in 1990. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Mike Hodges.
