A seminar entitled "Sports Medicine: Nutrition for the '90s" will be held Tuesday from 7 a.m. to noon at Southeast Missouri State University.

The half-day seminar will be held in the University Center Ballroom and Party Room. The university is co-sponsoring the event with the Southeast District Dietetic Association, St. Francis Medical Center, Sandoz Nutrition and Kraft Foodservice.

Today's competitive athletes are more concerned than ever with maximizing peak performance. Optimum nutrition can help provide the needed edge, organizers said.

The seminar will provide up-to-date information in the area of nutrition as it relates to exercise and sports performance. Participants will learn how to translate the science of exercise physiology into nutrition recommendations for athletes, organizers said.

Presentations are geared toward athletic trainers, physical therapists, registered dietitians, nurses, coaches, instructors of endurance and competitive sports and recreation therapists.

Kate Zager, coordinator of the SIU-C Wellness Center in Carbondale, will deliver the keynote presentation, "Care and Feeding of the Competitive Athlete."

Information regarding the latest research in nutrition and athletics, weight control, athletes' eating disorders, fluid replacement, hyponatremia, carbohydrate loading, use of liquid meals, training and precompetition/endurance diets, steroid use, and body composition will be presented.

Cost of the seminar is $10 for students, $15 for certified dietary managers and $25 for persons applying for four continuing education units (CEUs). Breakfast and beverages will be supplied. CEUs have been applied for registered nurses, registered dietitians, dietetic technicians, NATA and NSCA.
