KINDER HOLDS LEAD OVER HEARNES IN STATE SENATE RACE FUND RAISING

With Election Day approaching, state Senate candidates Betty Hearnes and Peter Kinder are drawing heavily on their political parties, other elected officials and political action committees for financial support.

The reports due seven days before the election, covering the period through last Saturday, show Kinder still holding a strong advantage in fundraising by about $45,000.

Hearnes' campaign report shows that she has raised $87,373 and spent $84,261, leaving a balance in her account of $3,411. By comparison, Kinder has raised $132,573 and spent $112,535. His account showed a balance of $16,232.

Since the report due 40 days before the election, Kinder has raised $47,301 and spent $43,681, while Hearnes has raised $39,704 and spent $40,927.

Kinder's largest contribution has been $6,100 from the Republican State Committee, while Hearnes has received $5,000 from the Democratic Senatorial Committee and $4,000 from the Democratic State Committee.

Hearnes has also received money from other political groups and officeholders including: Friends of Sen. Jim Mathewson, $500; Dirck for Senator, $500; Mississippi County Democratic Committee $250; Madison County Democratic Central Committee $100; and John Dennis for Senator $100.

Other political groups contributing to Kinder were: Citizens for Talent (House Republican Leader) $500; Missouri Republican Party, in-kind contribution, $772; Sen. Fred Dyer Campaign Committee $500; Sen. Marvin Singleton $300; Sen. John Russell Campaign Committee $300; Rohrbach for Senate Campaign $250; State Rep, Mary Kasten $150; and State Rep. Jim Graham $100.

Hearnes received $4,579 of her funds from people contributing less than $100, while Kinder got $7,904 in donations under $100.

The largest PAC contribution Hearnes received during the reporting period was $5,000 from the Missouri Association of Trial Attorneys.

Other PAC contributors to Hearnes included: $500 from the MERC-PAC; Missouri Bankers Association; Missouri Dental PAC; and R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co.
