I JUST wanted to say thanks to the Scott City Park Board for the Hotshots Basketball Contest. My children had a great time. It was a well-run event, and everyone had a good time. With the punt, pass and kick this summer and this program, I think Scott City is finally turning around the park system. Thanks again to the park board members...

Getting free lunch
REGARDING THE Democrat who doesn't care if Marc Rich is an FBI most-wanted criminal or if the White House furniture was stolen and damaged: We know you don't care. That's the hallmark of a liberal. Somebody else will pay for it. Someone will pay your welfare, subsidize your rent, your utilities. Others should pay their taxes, but not you. Liberals have shown by their support of the ex-pres that criminal activity is fine as long as they are getting a free lunch.

Holiday trimmings
I DROVE through one of the small towns nearby the other day and was surprised to see a fully adorned white Christmas tree in one of the abandoned store windows. There was a large "Happy Holidays" sign too. What is the time limit for taking that stuff down? Even if the building is unoccupied, someone surely must own it. Can't the owner manage to put that stuff away? Do you suppose someone is trying to be early for Christmas 2001? I guess it could even be a joke at the expense of the people who live there.
Earned respect
I RESPECT police officers as much as the next guy, but I've noticed more and more that they are becoming less and less peace officers. They seem to have become confrontation officers. Instead of going into a situation trying to diffuse it, it seems as if they approach it with supreme authority. When I was a young man, it seemed as if there was much more respect for peace officers, maybe because they earned it not because they demanded it.
