Needs to be in touch

AS A former Cape Girardeau police officer, I wholeheartedly concur with the findings of the study on the Cape Girardeau Police Department. There has been a big problem with morale which stems from the poor leadership, lack of communication and failure to give proper equipment to officers. I hope the next chief will be a little more in touch and cooperative than the last two chiefs of police.

Council's problem too

I AM appalled at the city spending $40,000 to conduct a police study when this could have been done from within by the city council. That $40,000 could have bought a lot of needed equipment for our officers and also a well-deserved pay raise. Everyone was aware of the pay problems but wouldn't listen. The two problems I see are not only management but also the city council, which also seems out of touch and unconcerned. This report will be a wake-up call for both.

Patched road is bumpy

I NOTICED that County Road 318 was patched again. If county officials would go to Scott County, they would see that it's better to recover the whole road so there aren't bumps.

A lot has changed

I THINK Beijing should have the 2008 Olympics. A lot can happen in seven years. Right now, I don't see a reason why the Chinese shouldn't host the games. Tiannemen Square was many years ago.

No hyphenated name

I HAPPILY took my husband's name when we were married. I can't imagine keeping my own name. Occasionally I might put my unmarried name in parentheses on private papers I have. I have never hyphenated my name.

Be nice, pleasant

IT'S DISGUSTING to think that so many people have to slam the Democrats and the Republicans. These people only belong to a political party. This isn't the point. The real point is that they might be your neighbor, Sunday school teacher, classmate or touch your life in some way. Thank God that a few bad apples won't spoil a whole tree. I wish Speak Out would become nicer and more pleasant to read.

Rent would go up

IN RESPONSE to the caller who thinks landlords should install air conditioning: Will the renters be willing to pay more money for rent?

Fix Highway 72

I'M CALLING in reference to the front-page story, "Jetton launches walk to improve highways." If anyone else looked at the map from Jackson, Mo., to Fredericktown, Mo., Highway 72 is the shortest way. Of course, MoDOT doesn't want the shortest way. They're talking about fixing Highway 34, but Highway 72 is the one that should be fixed.

A people problem

CAPE GIRARDEAU has no dangerous intersections. The people who use them are dangerous.

Not America's team

THE PERSON who says Bob Holden is so great by supporting taxing the taxpayers of Missouri to give a $100 million donation to millionaire owners and ball players should get his head examined. And by the way, St. Louis is not America's team.

Don't forget the VFW

I'M GLAD Cape folks enjoyed this year's fireworks, but I would like to say a belated thank you to the VFW for all the years they took on the financial and physical job of our Fourth of July celebration.

Forced to be union

TO ALL of you pitiful supporters of Gov. Bob Holden, I'm a dues-paying union man simply because I had to join to get the job. Now my dues are around $40 a month. They are just wasted on wing-tipped shoes and Continentals for the union bosses and political payoffs for the Democratic Party. Being in a union only holds me back. I'm a Republican who could do better without this union. Let's face it. Unions have no power.
