Try some compromise

POOR DAVID Limbaugh. He just can't seem to understand that in a representative demo-cracy, politics is the art of the possible. Compromise is its crowning jewel. Pragmatism is the political palliative necessary to sustain a people's republic. All Limbaugh needs to do is understand the necessity to compromise on many political issues, and he will snap out of the funk his recent column seemed to indicate he'd fallen into.

Afraid to change

NOW THE blame for the River Campus failure is put on sports fans? Give me a break. The River Campus is a political problem, not a social problem. If the university would have worked with Jim Drury instead of against him, the River Campus would not be on life support. There is plenty of room for a classical arts center as well as a sports center. Cape is a dying town because people are afraid to change. I would hate to see such a wonderful city become the next Cairo, Ill.

They will rebel

As a reply to your article about the new law making it illegal for people under the age of 18 to smoke: It is downright dumb. I am 21, so it doesn't affect me, but now more young adults are going to smoke just because the law says you can't. Most young adults tend to rebel against things they are told they cannot do. This is for sure going to be one of them.

Hiring based on looks

School will be starting soon, and my son doesn't understand why his mother can't find a decent job. Although age should not be a discriminator, it is. It seems after 40, employers feel you are a liability. Also, if a woman is not beautiful or may be 30 pounds overweight, she probably will not be hired, regardless of her qualifications. Of course, potential employers do not come out and state these things. They tend to say you are overqualified, underqualified or don't have enough experience. In today's world, an expressed willingness to demonstrate one's abilities and skills combined with a neat appearance simply is not good enough for prospective employers.

Eight great years

I LISTENED to Cindie Jeter's last broadcast on KZIM. She said she wanted to thank the listeners for eight great years. She has that wrong. This listener would like to thank her for eight great years. Southeast Missouri State University, you are very fortunate.

Best wishes, Tamara

I WAS genuinely sorry to read that Tamara Zellars Buck is leaving the Southeast Missourian. I have greatly enjoyed reading her columns, and I wish her the very best in her new career.

Pick up your trash

PLEASE, PEOPLE, pick up your trash. As I drive through Scott City, I see so much trash. Please take care of our Earth that God gave us. It's the only one we have.

A big heart

CONGRATULATIONS, CINDIE Jeter, on your new job at SEMO. She has the biggest heart of anyone I know. She stayed at the hospital with me the day my husband died, and she was there for me when I really needed a friend. Don would be so proud of you and all that you've done. Love you, Cindie. Congratulations.

Out with the old

I WAS at the Humane Society with my friend and saw the saddest thing. There was an older, long-haired, gray cat that was brought out there because the people didn't want her anymore because they had gotten a new pet. She was five years old, so she was half-price. I think it's horrible to discard a pet like used furniture just because you get a new pet. People should take more responsibility with pets and raise them for the rest of their lives. I think it's sad, and I hope someone has room for that cat in their home. Also, people should spay and neuter their pets because there were dozens of kittens there. Ninety percent of them won't get a home.

Narrow-minded ideas

ROBERT LUCAS' putting down of homosexuals and legal discriminatory practices remind me of Jim Crow laws and "separate but equal" of the 1950s and 1960s. Twenty years from now we will look back and shake our heads at how we can so mistreat such a large portion of Americans because they live differently. I commend Dennis Giszczak on standing up to ultra-conservative bullies. We have laws against discrimination for disability, gender, age and race. Sexual preference should be no different. To think otherwise is bigoted and narrow-minded.

Farmers' plight

JO ANN Emerson must have a lot of nerve to have meetings with farmers about agricultural problems. Most of those problems are due to the Freedom to Farm Act. Farm prices are so low that farmers are losing money, and they didn't pay taxes that would entitle them to a rebate. The new farm bill has been cut so that the deficient payments will average more than $900 less for every farmer in the country. Well, boys, they've placed a farm bill on you to cut your cash flow and cause many farmers to operate at a loss, and then they cut your support payments. Aren't you sorry you voted for the people who do this to you?

Honest, wise men

JOHN ADAMS, one of the most important and often neglected Founders of the American republic, has been rediscovered by the establishment. He was the first vice president under George Washington, and he became our second president succeeding the monumental Washington. On his first day in the new and still-unfinished White House at that time, Adams -- in a letter to his wife -- offered a simple benediction: "I pray heaven to bestow the best of the blessings on this house and all that shall here inhabit. May none but honest and wise men ever rule under this roof." It's basically happened over the centuries, but in recent years we had one who brought it almost to ruin. If Washington and Adams knew of this, they would turn in their graves. May George W. Bush restore the dignity and honor that Adams prayed heaven would bestow on this house. None but honest and wise men should ever rule under this roof.
