Worst to come

IF PEOPLE really think the refund checks are going to tilt the world on its axis or kick start the economy, then can they imagine the boost the monthly Social Security checks, which are collected and paid out in the same manner, become in the scheme of things? I fear some Democrats are about to wreck the Social Security train. Hang onto your seats. You ain't seen nothing yet.

Poor photo choice

I AM calling about the picture on the top of the front page of Aug. 2 of Korey Stringer. I think that was tacky to put him in that position. The picture on the sports page was much better. Out of consideration for his family and people who enjoy watching him play, a better picture on the front page would have been appreciated.

Doesn't add up

TO THE caller who said both he and his wife were on minimum-wage incomes and were getting $600 back: I would like to know who figured his income tax because there is no way they could have paid that much tax to get $600 back. Either he is feeding Speak Out a lie, or he does some skimming off the top of his income tax. Or maybe he calls minimum wage $10 to $12 an hour. All I have to say if he is telling the truth: Look for him to be audited.

Working in the heat

SOME PEOPLE need to appreciate what our taxes are accomplishing. The new sewer system will have the rain water separated from the sewage. The men working on this project should be applauded, because working in this heat is no picnic, but the job has to be done.

Need more variety

IT'S NOT that I dislike country music, but why are the same entertainers going to be at both the Sikeston rodeo and the fair in Cape Girardeau? I think it's kind of ridiculous. People don't get much of a variety. If you want to see country music, go to the rodeo. Then let some different artists come to Cape the next month. I think it would be nice to have some contemporary Christian artists coming to Cape, and I think a lot of people would like that. We need more variety instead of the same musicians in both places.

Courtesy service

SUNDAY MORNING I discovered what could be a postscript to the article "Any given Sunday" which appeared on the front page. I recently quit driving and called a cab to go to church. What a surprise to learn on Sundays that it is a courtesy trip if you are going to church, meaning there is no charge. More than the money saved, I appreciated the unique ministry of that taxi company. Thank you to those responsible.

Lutheran cooking

I AM from Jackson, and I want to thank the Lutheran church at Sedgewickville for the nice supper they had recently. They had everything on the table, and you did not have to wait for anything. Beef, fried chicken, chicken and dumplings, corn, green beans, mashed potatoes, potato salad, slaw, sliced tomatoes, cucumbers and dessert were very good. Thanks again.

Credit for checks

IN RESPONSE to the widow lady who called and wanted to thank President Bush for his generous tax refund: I don't know how big it is, but we have always had tax refunds on our income tax. I'm 66, and I've been getting a tax refund, small and large, since I was 17 years old. To give credit to Bush is like crediting a rooster for the sun's rising. By the way, I don't see the same lady give Franklin Delano Roosevelt credit for her Social Security and Medicare checks.

Different standards

IT'S PRETTY pathetic that people care more about animals than human beings. I am a citizen who has called to report child neglect. I'm told there is nothing to be done about a certain family, because there is not enough evidence. If I called the Humane Society about an animal, something would be done.

Some tax relief

HALLELUJAH FOR our wonderful, honest President Bush. As a middle-income person, I finally have some relief of high taxes with my $599.79 tax rebate. What a joy it is.

Go get the oil

WHY DO Democrats think everybody is so stupid? They think we can conserve our energy and get enough to satisfy everybody. Any idiot can solve that problem by getting more energy, meaning more oil.

Filth, trash pay off

BILL CLINTON gets a multimillion-dollar book deal. This shows one thing. In America, filth and no character pays off. The trashier you are, the more praise and fame you get. I'm sure all of you who worship this creep can brag to your children of his and your character.

Hurt feelings

THIS IS about the church controversy. I've been attending that church for many years, and I feel so hurt that the neighbors are so hostile toward us. I would like to invite each of you to visit our church. We love you and pray for you.

Great employees

THIS IS directed to ladies who work at Fred's, Lisa and Melissa. I just wanted to let these girls know how much they are appreciated. They always have beautiful smiles on their faces and greet people with a "Hello!" and "How may I help you?" even though they work without air conditioning and with sweat pouring off of their faces. I just hope Fred's knows what great employees these girls are.

You reap what you sow

I AM reading Speak Out articles and seeing repeated articles about how people feel people in Cape Girardeau are rude. It makes me wonder about the people who are complaining. I am a transplant to Missouri and Cape Girardeau. I've lived here over 30 years. I've lived in other states and big cities, and everywhere I've been I've found people are nice. Occasionally you run into someone who isn't, but that happens no matter what. Sometimes we probably are not very nice ourselves. I think you get back a lot of what you give.

The answer is no

THE PEOPLE of Jackson have spoken again and have voted down the school tax increase. I wonder how long it will be before it will be on the ballot again. They can't seem to take no for an answer. No new taxes.
