Unprepared teachers

I FIND it fascinating that many teachers who have college degrees need to be given basic skills tests and that many fail that test. This suggests that the great American experiment of giving any one who wants one a college degree and giving anyone a degree for attending class and not for subject mastery leaves a little to be desired.

Teachers' choice

I DON'T believe anyone asked teachers to buy school supplies out of their own money. When I was a Scout leader, I used my own money because it was something I was affiliated with and I wanted to help. I think that is what schoolteachers do. It's like when you give your money to charity. You choose to put your money where it goes. I am proud of the teachers who can put the money into bettering the education of the children.

Cuts aren't helping

GEORGE BUSH isn't doing so well. Interest rates have been reduced seven times in seven months that he has been president. Still the economy isn't doing any better.

Is bonfire ready?

TO SAM BLACKWELL: There is a field with those marshmallows in it on the west side of Interstate 55 at Exit 155. Just thought you might want to check out those marshmallows.

Slamfest was great

I THINK you guys did a great article on Slamfest. This was a great time. To bad they didn't have more events going on in Cape Girardeau. I would like to say thanks to Scott Porter. He's a real good guy in the House of Prayer. They did a wonderful job of putting everything together. It's good to see people coming together in the community without any violence. Just some peace, love and a little bit of basketball.

Big differences

THIS IS for the happy capitalist caller who thinks the Cape power plant project is like the Detroit auto industry. Big differences: Auto makers abide by environmental regulations. They are not union busters. They provide employment to local workers.

Bad location

IN RESPONSE to the editorial, "Jackson Homecomers is the best place to be": It says Homecomers is like a big family reunion. Most family reunions I go to are not in the middle of the street and block traffic and business for six days. This is the worst thing Jackson has done in a long time. This is supposed to be a growing town, but what kind of growing town blocks off its whole uptown area because of a tradition. If they want to have a tradition, let them have it in a park area somewhere where people who are not interested don't have to go through it every day. It also uses policemen who have other things to do than direct traffic in the morning. I wish they would think of some other place to have this tradition.

Tired of the digs

IT'S GETTING old to open the paper every morning to find a dig at the governor of Missouri. I don't think he's the greatest governor we've ever had, but the constant digging at him on little things and fighting the battle for him with Peter Kinder is all politics. I don't like to pay for that in the paper. Put it on the Opinion page.

Clean the roundabout

I THINK the roundabout would be much better received if the city would clean it up along with the streets leading to it. There is still gravel from the original construction as well as large chunks of dead grass and trash. If the street sweeper can't clean it up, then the city should send a crew with brooms.

Hidden in the weeds

AS I rode out William Street toward the mall, I was encouraged to see less trash on the roadway. Then it occurred to me that the trash was probably still there I just couldn't see it for the 4-foot-tall weeds.

Plenty of pork

DESPITE HIS recent tendency to side with Big Government liberals on a variety of issues, Sen. John McCain has maintained his fight against pork-barrel spending. Objecting to the Senate's addition to the transportation bill, McCain said this year's bill contains 683 projects totaling $3.148 billion in pork-barrel spending. McCain pointed out the primary recipient of pork was West Virginia, home of Appropriations Committee chairman Robert Byrd.

Jackson's traffic

THE JACKSON Board of Aldermen is planning a bypass around Jackson by extending West Lane through to Route D going past three schools with this added traffic. The Planning and Zoning Commission is meeting Sept. 12 at City Hall to vote on changing zoning to commercial for a school board member to put up businesses across the road from the middle school. This would also create more traffic for Orchard Elementary. This involves four schools

Three more years

I HOPE people are getting their fill of our Supreme Court-appointed president. The economy's already going bad. The oil companies' profits are really going up. More than likely Social Security is going to be cut into. The worst thing is we've got three more years of this guy doing dirty to the working poor and those on fixed incomes. But I have no sympathy for you poor, working poor and farmers who voted for Bush. You'll be so glad to get rid of him.

Use the running path

I THINK it's funny what they're saying about the runners on Mount Auburn Road. It's a very narrow road. The other day I was driving up there, and there were two runners, side by side, and they didn't even attempt to make way for traffic. That's what's so ridiculous about running on Mount Auburn. And if you think about it, there's a running and biking path right next to Mount Auburn. Why don't they use it?

Enough of the waste

FIRST KEN Starr. Now Peter Kinder. The Republicans doing what they do best: investigating. Wasting taxpayers' money and time. Enough is enough.
