THE LIBERAL wing of the Democratic Party is in full control of the agenda. The party has become home for anything-goes morality. They brag about the Democrat leaders years ago like Roosevelt, Truman and Kennedy, of which I was a supporter. These men would have been appalled at the platform now supported by their party. Liberalism will finally engulf both parties eventually as our country is on its way down. When it bottoms out, maybe we can get started again with values and decency...

Wait till it bottoms out

THE LIBERAL wing of the Democratic Party is in full control of the agenda. The party has become home for anything-goes morality. They brag about the Democrat leaders years ago like Roosevelt, Truman and Kennedy, of which I was a supporter. These men would have been appalled at the platform now supported by their party. Investigations at VIP

I'M CALLING in regard to the VIP squabble. First, I want to point out we have a son who has been there for several years now. He still cannot wait to get on that bus to get back to VIP each morning. He loves it down there. He knows all his supervisors, and they know him. Secondly, there are several investigations either that have been made or are in the process. Both have been investigating VIP and some of the other subsidiaries. I would suggest you check into that and see just what has come from that. The attorney general of Missouri has been investigating VIP also. They did a very thorough, two-year investigation, yet I must admit there are some hazy points of which I don't know the result.

Alternative fuels needed

ANYBODY WHO is not concerned about the long-term supply of petroleum should read page 56 of the May issue of Popular Science magazine. At the present time, the world is using four times as much petroleum per year as is being discovered. This means that unless we find alternate sources to replace this petroleum, we will have a real problem in the not-too-distant future. There were people who pooh-poohed the need for conservation and alternative energy supplies and the necessity for more efficient cars and trucks until new things such as fuel cells can be brought down in price and increased in efficiency to replace the internal combustion engine. In the not-too-distant future the full-sized cars that will get over 70 miles per gallon will be coming onto the market by 2005. These will have to do until alternate fuel vehicles come along. Two-dollar-per-gallon gasoline will look cheap in a few years. And many experts predict the demise of the internal combustion engine in that time.

Stretch the rules

WE ARE distressed that no provisions can be made for the Easter Seals children. Surely the fire marshal can stretch a rule or provide an alternative so those children will have the care they need. Charity can cover a lot of difficulties.

Ten Commandments on display

I'D LIKE To compliment all the people in Cape who are displaying the Ten Commandments signs in their front yards. I think it shows a great service to our Lord Jesus Christ.

Work this out

I CAN'T understand why of all the smart people in Cape Girardeau that something can't be found to take care of these Easter Seals children. Some way there has to be something that can be done. This needs to be taken care of right away. I wonder if the fire marshal couldn't have worked out something on the building, or they were just forced or asked to leave. There's always a way to work these things out.

Let him do his job

THIS MORNING there has been another Speak Out item about Clinton. I don't know what's the matter with people. They can't see their noses in front of their faces. All they want to think about is his personal life, which is an absolute mess. I agree with that, but he's done good for the country. They ought to stop and think about that. Soon he's going to be out of office, so get off the man's back and let him do his job.

Check it out for yourself

I CHALLENGE every person who has spoken out negatively about VIP to put feet to their words. Go visit the workshops. Go visit the clients' apartments. They are very well cared for, including their medical, physical, emotional and personal needs. Mr. Schmittzehe has pledged his entire life to the protection and care of these people. He works tirelessly to see to their best. He personally and routinely visits every workshop and knows the clients. It's time to check out the type of people, though they're few in number, who are distorting the truth. I personally spend time with the clients from time to time. I know the truth.

Don't mess it up

I'M A senior citizen and have been around quite a while. I remember when the program for the retarded individuals was first started, when there was just hardworking people with no money. A few hardworking enthusiasts who perhaps had children were interested in the welfare of the handicapped people. They got together and worked and worked, and some are continuing to work to bring a program like this to where it is today. Remember, they had no money. Today it's a fantastic program for giving dignity to the workers, and it gives a lot of relief to the entire family. Don't mess up a good program. Now I wonder why all the board members but one aren't talking. Surely if it's as bad as we're lead to believe, other board members would be talking.

Make the right call

WOW, TODAY when I drove east on Independence Street and made a left onto Kingshighway I actually didn't have to fuss myself about the bump in the road. It is amazing what a nice phone call to the right source can do toward getting the job done. Thanks much. Now if we can just get the hometown folks to mow and clean up their trashy yards. I wish I knew what number to call to get that job done.
