Thanks for the help

I would like to thank the two gentlemen who stopped to help me when my car broke down on Bertling on Wednesday morning. They fixed up my car so I could get it home to my husband and made sure I didn't have to sit out in the heat. I just wanted to thank them.

Tired of both

It just occurred to me while reading the newspaper that I am just as tired of hearing of the election badgering as I am about the Jackson school problems. I hope both of them will end soon.

Blinding light

As Al Gore appears to be pulling further ahead, columnist David Limbaugh tells us Gore's campaign strategy is failing. Limbaugh seems blinded by the light of Gore's blitzkrieg surge in the battle for the oval office.

He's really worried

Uh-oh. A Speak Out caller to the Southeast Missourian has claimed that Joe Lieberman lacks the character to be on the ticket to be with Al Gore. Look for Gore to drop Lieberman like a hot potato.

Enjoyable letter

I would just like to say that it is refreshing to see a letter to the editor in the paper that speaks the truth about the Republican Party, and I really enjoyed the letter from Alan Journet and his colleagues.

Working for others

Why are many hard working law-abiding, thrifty, family-responsible people made to feel guilty that they have succeeded in life and should be taxed one-half of their income to support those who won't work or, when they are made to work, spend their money on booze, drugs and gambling and then find themselves in a bind for lack of taking responsibility for their families and themselves? Then they think the responsible people should make up their wasteful deficit. It is no wonder Americans are taxed so heavily. These negligent people are only suffering from their own lack of taking responsibility. They think the taxpayers owe them a free living.

Need an apology

Thank you, editors of the Southeast Missourian, for the editorial, "The ghost lead: Where's Rather's correction?" Dan Rather has needed a dressing down for years. Why hasn't he told us about the Democrats' leaking about the grand jury and blaming it on the Republicans. What a sleazy thing to do. The TV news people said it too. They say it stinks to high heaven. I think they need to apologize.

Farmers' candidate

Gary BranUM had an eloquently written letter to the editor published recently. The gist of it was to encourage Missouri farmers to vote for city slicker Jim Tallent, GOP candidate for governor. Branum is a board member of the Missouri Farm Bureau. It has been documented to my satisfaction that the Farm Bureau has sold out small farmers to large agribusiness conglomerates. True tillers of the soil would best be served to vote for an outstate Missourian who really understands farm problems, the honorable Bob Holden, Democratic candidate for governor. I urge you to do so, and so would agrarian advocate author of the Declaration of Independence and third president of the United States, Thomas Jefferson.

Ludicrous law

I am reading on the front page of the Southeast Missourian about the change in the law with regard to spouse abuse or domestic violence. This is out of all reason. The idea that you can be charged with a felony for slapping someone's face or pulling their hair regardless of if it is your spouse or a person you don't know is ludicrous. The idea that you could simply say bad things to your spouse and be charged with domestic abuse is equally ludicrous. I tell you what this comes to. I believe this is undoubtedly a Democrat deal for more gun control. Once a person has been charged with domestic violence even though no harm came to anyone, you are no longer able to own guns in the United States of America. So if you guys are hunters, police officers, sports shooters or security guards, you need to be careful that you don't say something bad to your wife, or you might lose you right to own a firearm.
