Reasons for P&Z

AN ANSWER to the caller who said he wants to move to the county to do what he wants: We don't want you. Our farm has been in our family for over 100 years, and we have always taken of care the land, our animals and our buildings. We do not want you buying our neighbor's land and bringing in undesirable businesses, buildings and junk. We don't want your animals running loose. We take responsibility for our actions, and we want you to do so also if you move to the county. Drive around the county and see what happens since planning and zoning was voted out in 1992: junk yards, old cars, abandoned mobile homes. We don't want you out here unless you are willing to take care of your property, That is why we are in favor of county planning and zoning.

Save senior citizens

I WOULD like to make a few comments about the presidential race. I am sick and tired of hearing about education and saving Medicare and Social Security. They may save Social Security, but they will not save the senior citizens. Every year the government has tried to cut the cost-of-living adjustments for seniors until it is down to approximately 2.5 percent. They say we don't have any inflation. How does a senior recoup the price increases of fuel, food, electric, sewer, water, insurance, medical care, transportation and, above all, the school districts crying for new school additions, technology, teacher's pay and school operating costs. How do the retirees squeeze these extra costs from a 2.5 percent COLA? But the government will save Social Security. Just not its victims. Has anyone heard one candidate say why the United States feels we owe the world protection and aid to every country?

Let us vote on taxes

I THINK the citizens of Cape County outside of Cape Girardeau and Jackson should be allowed to vote on all the sales taxes that Jackson and Cape forces on other people. Any time a tax is imposed on their people, the people out in the county will have to pay. I think it is only fair if people in Cape and Jackson get to vote for this county planning and zoning, which we don't need.

Roses are neglected

I THINK it is sad the way the Jackson Park Board has neglected the roses out by the swimming pool. I don't believe they have been taken care of all summer.

She's not for New York

IF HILLARY wins that race in New York, it will just prove to me that Yankees don't even have sense enough to know that Hillary Clinton doesn't know a thing about New York. She is not out to help the New Yorkers. She is out to help herself win a seat in Congress and eventually the presidency. She doesn't give a darn about anybody in this entire world except Hillary Clinton.

Vote for the economy

REGARDLESS OF mistakes Bill Clinton may or may not have made, I don't think anybody can recall a time when our economy was doing as well as it is right now with unemployment as low as it is. If you are a working man and you want to live like a Republican, you better vote for the Democrats.

Low-brow dirty tricks

SOME CALL him the devil incarnate. Others say he is the gargoyle of Missouri's GOP. In my view, Daryl Duwe, Missouri's Republican Party communication director, is just a run-of-the-mill, perhaps below-average dirty trickster. In fact, I will go so far as to say Duwe's transparent below-the-belt battle to unseat Democrat state Sen. Jerry Howard of Dexter will backfire badly. Trumped up allegations against Howard are reminiscent of the hyped charges which took the statehouse seat long held by Democrat Gene Copeland of Charleston. However this time I think voters will smell a rat and overwhelmingly re-elect Howard.

Let band go first

I MARCHED in the band during the SEMO District Fair parade, and I think that it would be a good idea for the people in charge of the parade to have the horses go after the people marching in the band so that way the people marching in the band wouldn't step on the road apples.

Need accountability

I HAVE something I would like to say about politeness, rudeness and the choices we face. I was born in the 1950s and raised in a different generation. I was raised to be polite and kind and respectful to others. I have also raised my two children to be this way. After returning from a sports event, I had a quiet moment and realized that to be polite and kind is gone by the wayside. To be hateful and uncaring seems to be the norm for most people these days. I realize that I have passed on truly a wonderful gift to my children that I am thankful for. We live in a rude, uncaring society, and children are growing up much too fast. Our values have gone by the wayside. Even the adults we entrust our children to leave a lot to be desired in our society. No one says anything about bad language. No one says anything about uncaring teachers or coaches. They do not hold our coaches or teachers responsible for their behavior on and off the field. Coaches and teachers need to learn how to interact with both the children and the children's parents. By not doing this they fail to do their job, in my opinion. We need to start with our adults first, and we need to make our coaches and our parents accountable for their behavior.

Need gas money

WITH GAS prices still at a $1.50 all over the area and considering Al Gore's environmental policies, if Gore is elected I will have to get a third job to pay for the gas for me to get back and forth from the two I have now.

Plenty of transit now

THIS IS concerning the Cape County Transit Authority. What part of Cape County transit do you all not understand? I ride with them constantly. They serve my need. I live in the county. I ride into Jackson and Cape and go to the doctor. I pick up the phone. I call them. It is inexpensive. I am not a senior citizen and am not handicapped, so I do have to pay, but I would pay for another authority also. The drivers are courteous. The vans are clean. I don't really have a problem with any of it. I think you need to look at your options before you make some weird decision.

He had his chance

AL GORE wants to improve Social Security and Medicare. But if "America's greatest president" couldn't improve them in eight years, what makes Al Gore think he can?
