A PLEDGE is a solemn promise or a binding vow. When I was in school we had a flag in the room, and we pledged our loyalty to God and country every morning. That is not so today. Put flags in classrooms

A PLEDGE is a solemn promise or a binding vow. When I was in school we had a flag in the room, and we pledged our loyalty to God and country every morning. That is not so today. Now is the time for the school board to put a flag in every room and instruct the teachers to let the children pledge their loyalty to God and country every morning.

Go see the crime

I WANT you to know that on a weekday afternoon on Lorimier Street at Indian Park I saw a woman having sex with a drug dealer in his very nice car while another man watched from his van. I saw her get in that man's van and proposition other men and get in their cars. And I saw the same drug dealer do three drug deals. I saw the police drive around and around the block and then pull over a man on Sprigg Street for a traffic violation. This all happened within an hour's time period. Believe it. Go see it. This all happened in the middle of the afternoon.

Rename the bridge

I'M CALLING on behalf of a group of citizens. We would like the Emerson Memorial Bridge name changed to the Carnahan bridge. After all, he was the governor of our state.

Event was too religious

I WENT to the groundbreaking for the new high school. I was offended by the preaching. I don't think a public ceremony hosted by public officials should be a religious event.

An inventive idea

I WAS watching a program on police chases. We are always trying to figure out ways to stop cars from eluding police officers. I want to know if maybe they could make a gun that could shoot hollow darts and let the air out real slow of the tires of a car that is being chased so it wouldn't harm the traffic around the car being chased or the police officers, but all the tires would go flat and the person being chased would finally have to stop.

Religious outbursts

WE WERE embarrassed by the religious outbursts at the groundbreaking ceremony for the new high school. We thought this was out of line. A moment of silence would have been appropriate. We are very excited about the new high school as strong supporters of the public school system, but this certainly ruined the ceremony for us.

Why no arrests?

WELL, I see nobody is going to be charged for carrying a weapon in the Oct. 19 shooting down at Indian Park. Is the Cape Girardeau Police Department scared of stirring up any trouble? It seems like it has been going on a little to long to me.

Kittens were dumped

TO THE person who dumped three little kittens in Shadybrook Court: I had to take them to the animal shelter myself. Please be kinder to your animals and a more responsible person.

People still help others

I WOULD like to thank the two gentlemen who helped me with a flat tire. I really do appreciate it. I also want to thank those members of my church family at Grace United Methodist Church: Kevin Groves, Christopher Groves and Kim, his wife, who let me borrow her husband. And our minister and anyone else who was involved in helping me get my tire fixed. It is really wonderful to know that there are people out there who will help you out of a jam and I was definitely in a jam. Thanks, guys, and God bless you.

Only in a court of law

THE ASSUMPTION of innocence until proven guilty pertains to a court of law. It does not extend to a court of public opinion or anywhere else.

Can't see who it is

I HAVE been taking the Southeast Missourian for many years, but in the last year or so your pictures on the front page are impossible to tell who is in the pictures. There was a picture of the flu shots. If you knew anybody, there would be no way to tell it. If you can't take a picture and put in the paper where we can see what it is, just leave it out.

Typical stereotyping

CALM DOWN, Grandpa. Your grandson won't be damaged by a knowledge of sewing. Susie won't be harmed by a knowledge of woodworking. Your grandson will surely grow up to be the macho he-man who can't find his own socks that you seem to want him to be. Or, perish the thought, he might realize how unattractive your examples of hatred and venom are and decide to be a decent human being instead.

Wrong polling places

ISN'T IT a joke to have polling places in churches where many people vote for homosexual issues and atheistic views? I think the polling places for these issues should be in an abortion clinic or a gay bar.

A prayer connection?

I FOUND it an interesting irony when the Jackson Indians team went to Poplar Bluff. That game was opened with a student-led prayer. This prayer was as illegal as the prayer that was banned at the Jackson games, but Poplar Bluff prayed and won the game. I wonder if there is some connection here.

Trusting, good person

I READ the letter from the woman who has a son who goes to VIP in Fruitland. I have a son who goes there too, and I do not agree with her choice of words. Connie Pair is a very nice person. She is very trusting and very good with all the people up there. I would trust my son with Connie any time of the day or night.

Leaf schedule too early

Once again, the city's plan to pick up leaves is too early. How can I rake my leaves when they are still on the tree? Why can't the city be more flexible on this?
