Just say we've won

THE EXIT strategy for Slick Willy to save face or save American lives should be to declare that the bombing has been a success and that most of this ability to conduct any further damage has been diminished greatly. America does not want American young men used as ground troops to fight in another foreign small country and occupy it indefinitely as in Bosnia. That Bosnia time period promised was broken by Clinton, and the American people do not trust or believe him. And besides he has already said, "No ground troops will be used in Yugoslavia". So we should just get out and declare we have won.

It's not such a big deal

REFERRING TO Joe Aden's letter, who is the mayor of East Cape Girardeau, Ill., regarding having to drive to McClure to vote: I live in Missouri, and I don't think it's a big deal. What's he got against the East Cape Girardeau voters driving six miles in order to save a little bit of money for that poor county over there and an effort to reduce government expenses. What does he have against that? When I was growing up and learning how to vote a long time ago, people walked five or six miles in order to vote. It's a precious privilege. I'm sure those folks can get up 5 or 10 minutes early to go vote. And I sure don't like to hear people like Joe Aden to crying about it.

Comparing expenses

WE WERE told the U.S. couldn't afford the expense of Ken Starr's investigation, and the Clinton hearings were such a distraction that we had to get over them to conduct the nations business. Don't most consider war a distraction? Also, that single downed stealth airplane cost far more than the Starr investigation. Additionally, the $50 million we sent to help the refugees that we helped force out of Albania by our actions also cost far more than the entire Starr budget. Go figure. I guess we have to destroy the region to save it regardless of expense or distraction from Clinton's golf game.

Who cares about the killing?

THE CLINTON administration simply does not care how many Americans are killed. Just as long as the Albanians aren't killed.

They were on television

EVERYBODY IN the entire world knew where those three United States soldiers were. They were on television last night. What do you think, that Yugoslavia and Macedonia, that whole part of the country, they're not familiar with where they live? That's why they were captured.

Try reading the Bible

THE AMERICAN Bible Society has a wonderful program where they give you these little bookmarks, and on the bookmark is a schedule for reading a chapter out of the Bible each day. And at the end of the year you will have read the entire New Testament. It's a great program, and I encourage you to ask your church to get you one of these bookmarks that has your schedule on it. I think it's time for us to start trying to read a little bit more in the Bible, pray a little bit, and think about things that are more important in this world.

Willing to pay more

THIS IS to the citizen who does not want to pay higher freight if we keep the big trucks off the Mississippi River bridge. I think we would agree that it would be better to pay some higher freight cost and have the bridge closed to all vehicle traffic, or worse yet, to have the bridge fail and dump somebody in the River. Especially if that somebody would happen to be me.

No pledge of allegiance

MY THIRD-grade daughter just informed me that they do not recite the pledge of allegiance in their classrooms anymore. Would you like to give me a good reason for this?

College education leaves debt

I AGREE with the caller that college is an investment. I also feel college is a cost. It is unrealistic for anyone to say that four years of college costs $12,000. Most people now even take five years to graduate. I recently graduated from Southeast Missouri State University with over $20,000 in student loans to pay for tuition, books, room and board, food and other expenses. I did work all throughout my four and a half years of college to offset costs. However, the work I chose has a starting salary of $17,000. I too am thankful for my education. However, I think we need to remember the middle-income people who cannot receive grants nor can their parents help with the expense. Some people do go to college to assist the less fortunate and will never be able to make $85,000 per year.

Lots of good national news

WHAT'S WITH Gary Rust? He recently wrote of the need to often divert his attention from what he called the "depressing national news." What is depressing about the national news? The unprecedented economic boom continues, the stock market recently hit a record high, unemployment and inflation are low, millions of new jobs are being created, the U.S. is flexing its military might to stop genocide and prevent a wider European war. In addition the crime rate has greatly dropped, and the welfare rolls have dropped dramatically. These are heady times for America. We may be at the peak of our power. Beyond that, Mr. Rust wrote that in order to cope with what he thinks is depressing news, he read a book by John Ashcroft. Now I'm depressed. Oh, well, I know how to cope with my depression in a healthy way. I'm going to read a book by Al Gore.

Is Clinton willing to fight?

TALK IS cheap. I would just like to know one thing. Would President Clinton be willing to go himself into this mess, or would he sneak off to Canada? Would he be willing to send his daughter over there to fight in that mess?

Proud of local hero

I WOULD like to congratulate the paper for writing a front-page article on Matthew Morton. And, the community is very lucky to have a hero Marine raised in this area.
